Equations
Formation of Ions
 Cation (+)
 Groups IA, IIA, IIIA, IVA
 Anion (–)
 IVA, VA, VIA, VIIA
Writing the Chemical
Formula of a Compound
 A Cation composed of one atom retains the
name of the element from which it is produced.
 An Anion composed of one atom always ends in
ide rather than the usual ending of the name of
the element from which it is produced.
 Polyatomic Ions are ions that are composed of
two or more atoms.
Naming Covalent
Compounds
 Covalent Compounds are compounds composed
of non-metals (including H, B, Be).
 Greek prefixes
Lewis Dot Symbol
 Gilbert Lewis
 Valence electrons
Balancing Chemical Reactions
or Chemical Equations

 Combination or Synthesis
 Element A + Element B --> Compound
 Decomposition or Analysis
 Compound --> Element A + Element B
 Single Replacement
 Element A + Compound B --> Compound C +
Element D

 Double Replacement
 Compound A + Compound B --> Compound C +
Compound D
