Abstract
In order to demonstrate reduction of this dissolved party in urban waste water by a
biological issue and utilization of swan mussel Anodonta cygnea, Zebra mussel,
Dreissena Polymorpha and the mud snail Limnea sp , in reduction of Nitrate &
phosphate in urban wastewater, individuals, were placed in a closed system at 19-
20º C. Their filtration rate (ml.min-1.g-1 (Ash Free Dry Weight (AFDW)) and retention
of dissolved phosphate and nitrate salts was measured. Estimation of water volume
processed through gills was calculated with the help of dixenic culture of chlorella sp.
and Scenedesmus sp. Algae developed in Guillard and Rhyter (1962) media. The
algae population was used when its concentration arrived to about 400.103 cells. ml-
1
.
Our results showed that fresh algae is capable to remove an important part of
dissolved materials as it develops in order to subvention its vital needs.
Also there was a positive correlation between weight (AFDW) and specific filtration
rates of mussels. Furthermore results showed that increase of pollutants
concentrations caused an increase of specific filtration rate by mussels. Considering
to our results we can take account on Anodonta cygnea as a natural water
purification agent in urban waste waters treatment. This work allows thinking about
this agent in other in situ applicable experiments.

Key words: Waste Water Treatment, Filtration Rate, Anodonta Cygnea, Phosphate
And Nitrate Removal, Chlorella Sp., Scenedesmus Sp.
