Definitions
A control system is an interconnection if components forming a system configuration that will provide a desired system response. Simply, a control system provides an output or response for a given input or stimulus,

Components of a Control System

Process Measurement Device Controller Actuator

An open-loop control system

S R

Sensor

Controller

Actuator

Process

An open-loop control system utilizes an actuating device to control the process directly without using feed back.

A closed-loop control system

S Controller Actuator Process R

Sensor

An closed-loop control system uses a measurement of the output and feedback of this signal to compare it with the desired.

Open loop vs. Closed loop

Systems in which the output quantity has no effect upon the process input quantity are called open-loop control systems. Systems in which the output has an effect upon the process input quantity in such a manner as to maintain the desired output value are called closed-loop control systems (Feed Back control).
