TOPIC: MEASURING LENGTH

A. INSTRUMENTS

1. Below are different kinds of instruments used to measure specific length. They are: Instrument Diagram Meter ruler Uses

To measure short length (Length of book)

Measuring tape

To measure long length (Width of a room)

Internal & External calipers

To measure inside and outside diameter of a round object. (Inside and outside diameter of a beaker)

Micrometer screw gauge

To measure small value of length such as nearest 0.01mm. (Thickness of a piece of paper)

Vernier calipers

To measure short length such as nearest 0.1 mm. (Diameter of a ball bearing)

B. HOW TO USE A METER RULER

1. Q is the correct way when taking a reading on a ruler. 2. When taking a reading, ensure that the eye is placed vertically above the mark being read on the ruler at position Q.

C. MEASURING THE LENGTH OF A CURVE 1. A curve is a line which is not straight. 2. To measure the length of a curve, we use a ruler and a string.

D. INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CALIPERS

1. Internal calipers are used to measure the internal diameter of an object.

The internal diameter of a beaker is measured by using an internal caliper and a ruler

2. External calipers are used to measure the external diameter of an object.

The external diameter of a beaker is measured by using an external caliper and a ruler

E. VERNIER CALIPERS

1. Vernier calipers is use to measure length and distance to the nearest 0.1 mm (0.01 cm or 0.0001m) Examples:

F. MICROMETER SCREWGAUGE

1. A micrometer screwgauge is use to measure length in the nearest 0.01 mm (0.001 cm) Examples:
