The Report Card by Andrew Clements

Presentation by: Connor Simmons

Main Characters
Nora and Stephen are fifth graders in Philbrook, Connecticut. They have know each other since kindergarten Nora is very smart but she gets bad grades to fit in. Stephen is not smart and does not pay attention in class but tries hard. Nora is the youngest of three children and Stephen is the oldest of two.

Problem
Nora thinks that if you get bad grades it doesnt judge how hard you try and how you think.

Important events
Nora came up with a plan to get bad grades on her report card. She got D, D, D, D, C, and D on her report card. She went to the principals office to talk about her grades with her parents and the principal.

She took an intelligence test and got a very high score. Nora and Stephen came up with another plan to have her class get zeros on the next test. Nora and Stephen got called to the principals office for telling the other students to get zeros on their tests.

Solution to the story


Nora spoke to her class and told them she was sorry for telling them to get zeros on their tests. She also told them it is important to do good work in school.

Lesson Nora learned


Nora learned that grades do matter and that they are important because it is who you are.

Summary
In the beginning Nora thought she could get Ds and it would show the teachers that grades didnt matter. She realized that grades matter and it is important to try your best because that reflects who you are.

About the author


Andrew Clements was born in 1949 in Camden, New Jersey. Attended college at Northwestern University and National Louis University. He taught school in Chicago for 7 years, moved to New York City and got a job as a songwriter then publishing. In 1990 he began writing stories and now has written more than fifty books. He has a wife and four children and lives in Westborough, Massachusetts.
