Fall 2006

ME 363 Project 3
Due on 11/10/05 (Friday) 10:30 AM
You are required to decide on the parameters for the following parts
1. The bolt is 1.25 long x 0.25 dia. You are required to find out other dimensions for the
hexagonal head.
2. The Washer and Nut are to be selected and modeled according to the bolt size.
3. Decide on a diameter of the shaft.
4. You also need to decide the dimensions of the inspection port on the top housing.

You are required to submit:

A soft copy of the project similar to the other projects

Prints of all the parts on separate pages
A one-page report on the design of shaft, inspection port, bolt, washers and nut.
Note: Since the design is just conceptual, you need not to use equations.

The subsequent pages will help you design the impeller and the impeller housing. Some
dimensions are provided below to give you an idea of the recommended size.

1. The flange thickness of the impeller housing is suggested around 0.5 inches.
2. The flange width is suggested to be 1+ 3* bolt dia.
3. The addition of the end flanges should not increase the length of the impeller housing.
4. You need to decide on the clearance between the bolt and the hole.

To summarize, you are responsible to model the following parts:

Impeller housing - dimensions given

Impeller – dimensions given
Hexagonal bolt – 1.25 x 0.25dia
Washers
Hexagonal Nut
Shaft

Once you have all the parts modeled, the last step is the assembly.
The final shape of the impeller bottom half is shown above. Blend the edges highlighted
by “Radius”. You may want to accept the 1.0 Radius as shown or decide on your own. In
each case you need to mention about that in the report.

Make a circular array of the holes as shown below.

Use the suggested dimensions for the flange thickness and width.
Impeller: Note the dimensions for the impeller.

Create the center plane for sketching the impeller blade as shown below:
