NYPIRG EXAMINES SPENDING IN 2011 LOCAL ELECTIONS


NEARLY $52 MILLION SPENT SO FAR THIS YEAR
Local committees spent $51,702,809.97 between January 12 and October 24, 2011. The following three
charts break down these totals.

25 LOCAL CANDIDATES ON NOVEMBER BALLOT WHO SPENT THE MOST, 1/12/11 10/24/11
This chart excludes candidates who are not on this years general election ballot. If all local candidates
were included, the leader would have been Mayor Bloomberg, whose current campaign committee
spent $5,644,999.93 this year.

reelection this year and those who lost in the primaries.
The $51,702,809.97 spent by these committees in 2011 is up slightly from the equivalent period in 2007,
when local committees spent $50,693,299.27. However, these numbers are skewed by the spending by

Mayor Bloomberg mentioned above. 2 Spending by candidates with a declared office dropped from
$30,853,535.80 to $27,620,674.80; spending by local party committees dropped from $14,767,199.87 to
$13,982.520.27
