The Anatomy of Female Genital System

It is divided into:
1. Vulva and perineum (External genitalia)
2. Vagina
3. Cervix and body of uterus
4. Appendages of uterus:
Fallopian tube
5. Ovary (Internal genitalia)
6. Supports of uterus:
- Various Ligaments
- Levator ani- muscle
- Diaphragm ( Urogenital )

The Vulva

Includes the following Structures:

1. Hair.
2. Mons pubis.
3. Labia Majora.
4. Clitoris.
5. Labia minora.
6. Introitus.
7. Hymen.
8. Vestibule.
9. Fossa navicularis

The Vagina

A fibromuscular canal lined by stratified squamous epithelium


Ant. wall around 7 cm
Post. wall around 9 cm
Normally commenced by (Doderlein’s bacillus)

The Uterus

A fibromuscular organ like an inverted pear consistes of :

- The Body (5 cm)


1. Fundus.
2. Corpus.

- The Cervix (2.5 cm)

The fallopian tubes:

10 cm long divided into:


1. Interstitial portion.
2. Isthmus.
3. Ampulla.
4. Infundibulum ( Fimbrial portion)

The ovaries:

Almond shaped ,solid ,grayish pink 3cm x 1.5 x 1 cm.


- Cortex.
- Medulla

The bladder, Urethra, Ureter

The pelvic muscle, ligaments and fasciae:

Pelvic Diaphragm is formed by:


Levator ani muscle

The perineal body:

Is the perineal mass of muscular tissue lies between the anal and the lower third
of the vagina.

The Arteries:
The ovarian A.
The Internal iliac A.
The Superior rectal A.

The nerve supply of the pelvic viscera:

1. Sympathetic ( pre aortic plexus)

With Superior Hypogastric plexus


Inf. Hypogastric plexus
(plexus of Frankenhanser)

2. Parasympathetic S1,S3,S4

3. Ovarian plexus
