DIFFERENCES

BETWEEN

DECIDUOUS AND PERMANENT DENTITION

1. The crown of deciduous teeth are more bulbous than that of permanent teeth Deciduous molars-M-D dia > O.C dia

Dec : incisors and canines-M.D and I.C are similar.

2. Occlusal table of Dec : molar is narrower than that of per : in buccolingual plane. d/t : occlusal convergence of the buccal and Lingual surfaces. 3. The dec : molars have markedly constricted neck.

4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

The dec : teeth are usually whiter. The dec : teeth are smaller in all dimensions than the per : teeth No premolars in dec : dentition. Contact areas bet dec : molars are broader, flatter and more gingivally placed. Enamel thickness 0.5-1mm in dec;teeth. 2-2.5mm in per. teeth.

9. The dec : pulp horns are closer to outer surface relatively and the purpal floor is thin and porous. 10. The purpal horns are higher in deciduous molars, especially : the mesial horns and pulp chamber are proportionately larger than per teeth.

11.

Bifurcation area is shorter (root trunk) in dec. than that of permanent. Accessory canals are also (+) at furcation area. So, pulpal infection can easily spread into this area and presented as "gum boils".

12. The radicular pulp of dec : molars follows a thin, tortuous and branching path. (therefore RCT is difficult) 13. The roots of the deciduous teeth are longer and more slender in

comparison with crown size than those of per : teeth.

14. The roots of dec: molar are flared to allow for the development of the per: premolars.

15.

The enamel rods of per: teeth incline horizontally or apically in the cervical
1/3. The enamel rodes of dec: teeth incline towards the occulsal plane.

16. Dentinal tubules of dec: teeth are wider than those of per: teeth . (therefore increased transmission of infection and rapid conduction of thermal changes. Attrition marks on incisal edges. Difference in eruption periods. Enamel hardness per > dec.

More homogenous
High degree of calcification (more translucent)

Thickness of enamel.
