Hackley Statement of Teaching Philosophy

Learn something new everyday. This is the motto I live by and the philosophy I ascribe to as an educator. The opportunity to open someones eyes to a completely new experience or instill my love of learning is a privilege. The discipline I have chosen to teach is rewarding in its multidimensionality whereby it affords the opportunity to continue to learn new things every day. Communication includes the transference of knowledge, as a result, I demonstrate for my students its also a field founded on submersing oneself in a variety of subjects and being generally well rounded. Thus, my courses might cover writing, video production, multimedia or integrating media formats online, but the breadth of learning is unending; my students will know more about the world around them and in return more about themselves. In my courses, the classroom is a fluid environment. Courses simulate true-to-life scenarios expecting professionalism and assertiveness from students. This sometimes requires confrontation with the critical issues and welcoming of open discussion. Forcing students out of their comfort zone to help them become better observers is critical. I expect more of my students because I believe each has the potential to push the envelope. Pushing students to be less timid and confront their weaknesses is a key component. For many students, college is their first exposure to independence and questioning. I believe in empowering students to not only question, but to investigate and be persistent in order to gather information; a skill they will be able to use in all aspects of their lives. However, measuring success as an educator is not easily defined. I have had the opportunity to see students through the entire collegiate experience and as they become mature, productive citizens and colleagues. For me, a job well done is when a student tries something different or speaks his/her mind instead of being apprehensive. It is also when a student is just able to navigate the twists and turns life may throw there way independently. Ultimately, its not merely about shaping communications professionals, but active and responsible members of society.
