Lesson: Linear inequalities in one variable and their solutions ( Textbook reference section 2.

8) Prerequisite knowledge:
1. The fab five ( see section 1.7 of the text) 2. Order ( see section 1.2 objectives 4 &6 and section 1.4 objective 2) 3. Arithmetic skills

A linear inequality in one variable can be written in the form Ax+B<C where A , B and C are real numbers and A is not zero. The solution to a linear inequality in one variable is the set of numbers each of which makes the inequality true. There are three ways to describe the solutions
1. Draw the graph of the solution set 2. Use interval notation 3. Write the solution in set-builder notation

Linear inequalities in one variable are solved by writing a series of equivalent inequalities until arriving at the inequality x < a number or a < x < b ( that is x is between a and b) In addition to the fab five properties two special properties of inequalities are required. 1. The addition property of inequality: If A ,B, and C represent real numbers then A < B and A+C < B+C have exactly the same solution. The multiplication property of inequality: If A, B, and C represent real numbers ( C is not zero) then i) The inequalities A < B and AC < BC have the same solution when C is positive
2.

The inequalities A < B and AC > BC have the same solution when C is negative
