    The word purging descends from the Indo-European (IE) root peue- which means “to purify, cleanse.” Its paronyms include depurate, expurgate, pour, purblind, puree, Puritan, and spurge. The word priest descends from the IE root per-1 which is the base of over 120 words “with the basic meaning of forward, through” as well as a “wide range of extended senses such as before, early, first, chief, toward, against, near, at, around.” Among its paronyms are forth, from, further, premier, pride, primary, prime, prince, principle, principal, priest, probe, proof, proud, and proton. The suffix –hood means “state or condition of being” and descends from the Old English –had which meant “condition, position.” Originally, –hood was a free-standing word related to the Old English hed meaning “position, dignity”, the Old Norse heidr meaning “honor, dignity”, and the Gothic haidus meaning “manner.” These senses of the word survive now only in the English suffix. THEMES: As indicated above, the suffix –hood emphasizes conditions and POSITIONS OF DIGNITY and honor. The keyword priest and several of its paronyms also convey the idea of dignity and/or honor, e.g. premier, prince, principal, principle, probity, proper, and approval.
