Isomorphisms of semi-direct products.

Proposition. Let H, K be groups, let i : K Aut(H) (i = 1, 2) be homomorphisms, and let Gi := H i K be the corresponding semi-direct products. Let Hi and Ki be the natural images of H and K respectively in Gi . If
(C) : there exist isomorphisms : H H, : K K such that k K,

2 (k) = 1 (k) 1 , [that is, the following diagram commutes: K Aut(H) 1 conjugation by K Aut(H)
2

then there exists an isomorphism : G1 G2 such that (H1 ) = H2 . Conversely, if H is abelian and such a exists, then (C) holds. Proof. If (C) holds, dene by (h, k) = (h), (k) (h H, k K),

and check . . . Now suppose only that exists. let : G1 /H1 G2 /H2 be the induced isomorphism. Dene and to be the natural compositions
: H H1 H2 H, : K K1 G1 /H1 G2 /H2 K2 K. j

Unraveling the denitions, we nd for all h H, k K that: () 2 (k) (h) = j (1, (k))(h, 1)(1, (k))1 , 1 (k) 1 (h) = j (1, k)(1 (h), 1)(1, k 1 ) = j (1, k)(h, 1)(1, k)1 .

Set x = (1, (k)) and y = (1, k). These two elements of G2 have the same image in G2 /H2 , so x = ya for some a H2 ; and since H2 H is abelian we have, with = b = (h, 1) H2 , xbx1 = yaba1 y 1 = ybaa1 y 1 = yby 1 , so that both lines in () represent the same element, and (C) holds.
