PINK COLLAR MOVEMENT $$$

International Director MICHAEL KLICH

www.itkmag.com
Ed’s Note

Welcome!

We are finally reaching that time of year again! It is

the 11th month of the year and boy has it just flown
by. Exciting stuff right?

We are on our 11th Issue for ITK and we keep

venturing on, enjoying every single month that
heads our way.

So, what are my thoughts, well, we caught up with

some fab interesting peeps across the globe. I
managed to catch up with International
director/producer Michael Klich and DJ Paul
Newhouse, do me a favour, visit his website and
download some of his mixes!

Then it seems every second of the day awesome

talent is born and delivered directly to our
shores...Yes my darlings, we are talking fashion
now…I have to admit, my fear that South Africa
would never quite get on the international level of
fashion, music and just general attire has long been
trampled on.

Every day someone new creates something ―Uber

Fabulous‖ whether it is clothing design or simply
putting together a structure, etc. In saying all that -
Cape Town managed to win the Design Capital
Host City for 2014 Whoopi!

Ok, so life in SA isn‘t that bad after all, is it now?

Why do I say that(despite the rubbish weather), let

me not moan… I will bore you to death.

As I was saying, despite the ‗awful‘ weather, it is

party season. The season to be jolly, office parties,
summer flings and of course summer festivals.

Take care of yourself…….

and be SAFE!

i skapie
1.Hello, welcome to ITK Magazine, first of all, I want to
say the following...your brand is wicked...tell us more
about it?

Firstly thank you so much for the love, much

appreciated....The brand, iSkapie, started when I
realized just how much I loved cothes and from
there it grew. As time went I noticed that guys are
not really catered for in terms of variety especially in
PE (where I am from), I mean if you not shopping at
Edgars, its Truworths if not that its Vertigo...and so
iSkapie was born.

2. Seriously now, what does i Skapie mean? To me it

sounded like a sheep in the Cape? Ha ha

LOl, the term is largely a Eastern Cape term, iSkapie is

basically a person who lacks conventional style, a
person who dresses in thier own way so he does not
fit in with the masses...in some places they call these
guys these iBharu or iSlaaptiger and the list goes on.

3. When did you start designing? Was this always your

passion?

Well I started with engineering studies first to make

my folks happy which barely qualifies as designing I
know, but I always wanted to do fashion and that I
started about 6 years ago.

4. Where do you stock your brand?

We used to stork a boutique called A-list last season, but

now we are opting to find more alternative forms of selling
our stuff i.e The Old Biscuit Mill Market which happens
every Saturday or directly from our Facebook page etc

5. Have you heard of WOZA (Wear Only ZA)?

Yes we have, in fact I normally wear the badge myself,

great campaign.

6. Do you think that the men in South Africa on top of

it, when it comes to fashion?

Well there is always room for development, but in the last

10 years we have improved in leaps and bounds, am
really proud of what the guys have achieved.

7. What is your worst men's fashion mistake?

We call these “Fashion Ooops” lool, but to be fair

everyone has their own style of dressing and that is what
iSkapie is about, being an individual
8. Any international vision? Where would be your
ultimate destination to get recognition?

New York or London Fashion Week

9.Tell us about the fabrics you use, why you chose to

use them and are you a proud
supporter of local manufacturing?

Definitely, everything we make is 110% locally made,

from sourcing of the fabric and the
manufacturing,. In terms of fabrics, for the summer
we used a whole of cotton voile for our shirts which is
a nice cool material making it perfect for the
summer sun.

10. Have you ever designed something OTT where

someone may have said
words along the line ‘Daahling, seriously, what are
you wearing?

Yes I have, I made a graduation gown that was

inspired by Smarties (the sweets yes).
so you can imagine how colourful this dress was, but I
ended up winning the Most Creative Range so it was
all good in the end :-)

11. If Julius Malema asked you to put together attire

for him, what would be the
ultimate look you would put him in?

LOL, wow really...well I think he would pull off one of

our iSkapie khaki chinos
with a slick sandal, topped with our Dashida shirt
which we are dropping this summer.

[2:05:00 PM] Nina Zani: Am I on time?
[2:05:11 PM] Michael Klich: Hello
[2:05:15 PM] Nina Zani: I was not sure if we agreed SA time or Europea
time.
[2:05:18 PM] Nina Zani: Sorry
[2:05:30 PM] Michael Klich: We have the same time...
[2:05:44 PM] Nina Zani: Oh really?
[2:05:47 PM] Nina Zani: Shit!

[2:05:52 PM] Nina Zani: That means I am 2 hours late

[2:05:59 PM] Michael Klich: It´s ok
[2:06:03 PM] Michael Klich: I have time
[2:06:34 PM] Nina Zani: How are you?
[2:06:44 PM] Michael Klich: Fine thank you
[2:07:02 PM] Nina Zani: Great

[2:07:12 PM] Nina Zani: Well thank you for giving me a few minutes to chat
[2:07:26 PM] Nina Zani: 10 years later
[2:07:31 PM] Michael Klich: oh yes
[2:09:18 PM] Nina Zani: I am just watching your video
[2:09:24 PM] Nina Zani: Amazing

[2:09:30 PM] Michael Klich: Thanks

[2:09:33 PM] Nina Zani: Tell us more about it....
[2:10:19 PM] Michael Klich: It is my first music video as a director...
[2:12:03 PM] Michael Klich: I know Naomi (the band) from my poker group and
I asked them if they would do this video with me. Until then I have been working
as a director and choreographer for stage shows, such as vaudeville and doing
events.

[2:12:32 PM] Michael Klich: It has been my dream for more than 15 years to
do music videos
[2:12:40 PM] Nina Zani: I absolutely love this
[2:13:46 PM] Michael Klich: Thank you. When I listened to this song for the
first time, I had the whole film in my head. So I knew I had to do it
[2:13:56 PM] Nina Zani: What was the creative thought behind it all...
[2:15:41 PM] Michael Klich: Firstly, I have to say, that I always follow my
instinct and my spontaneous inspirations. The pictures came to my
mind…
[2:16:09 PM] Michael Klich: I just saw the images… like a dream…
when I listened to the song in the beginning
[2:17:20 PM] Michael Klich: I knew I had to keep it simple and I
wanted to bring some deeper layers and make it symbolic
[2:17:25 PM] Nina Zani: That is brilliant...now I met you 10 years ago
as a stunt actor for Southern Comfort - what is it like being on the
other end of camera?

[2:19:08 PM] Michael Klich: It was always hard for me to work in front
of a camera. I felt judged and had a lot of pressure. As a director, I
don´t feel pressure and I can treat my actors the way I wanted to
be treated.
[2:19:24 PM] Nina Zani: You are right
[2:19:29 PM] Nina Zani: it is hard work
[2:19:45 PM] Nina Zani: I don't think anyone understands how difficult
it can be – sometimes it is easy of course

[2:20:07 PM] Nina Zani: Being in film/television/ producing/directing -

was this always your passion?
[2:20:14 PM] Nina Zani: Any inspirations ?
[2:23:26 PM | Michael Klich: Yes, I came from circus and always wanted
to stay in entertaining business. so I did a lot of different jobs in that field.
..Such as stuntman, actor, acting-coach, acrobatics teacher and motion
graphics artist… Now, it seems to lead all into that position as director,
here I can follow all my impulses and can give back all I have learned so
far

[2:23:45 PM] Nina Zani: Circus?

[2:23:56 PM] Nina Zani: Tell us more about that? Very interesting....
[2:24:54 PM] Michael Klich: My parents used to be circus acrobats when I
was a child, back in the 70´s so I lived in a circus until the age of 5
[2:25:23 PM] Nina Zani: Aah, wow, clearly why you braved the stunt world
and into entertainment - media industry....
[2:26:04 PM] Nina Zani: I think it is good to have a variety of skills
especially in this Industry because you can incorporate it into everything
else you do....
[2:26:22 PM] Michael Klich: That’s what i think
[2:27:29 PM] Michael Klich: I never knew why I did so many different
things, I always had the feeling that I had to collect skills for some reason..
.Now it makes sense...
[2:27:53 PM] Nina Zani: Absolutely, being versatile is key....
[2:28:01 PM] Nina Zani: What is the industry like in Germany
[2:28:16 PM] Nina Zani: Is it difficult to crack - are you looking at
venturing abroad?
[2:28:36 PM] Nina Zani: Where would you want to LAUNCH yourself
even more?

[2:30:53 PM] Michael Klich: hmmm... I never think about questions

like that... I just have the plan to get to work as a director for music
clips and commercials. Therefore, I started to make music videos
and now I‘m curious how far I will make it in the next 5 years... when
you start to think about the reality and real chances... you are lost...

[2:31:29 PM] Nina Zani: I hear you...and I think what you are doing is
fabulous and one needs to put oneself out there!
[2:31:37 PM] Nina Zani: Are you working on any other projects now?
[2:31:47 PM] Nina Zani: Where can we have a look at the work you
have done?
[2:33:42 PM] Michael Klich: Yes, I will shoot my next music video this
weekend. It will be for a newcomer industrial band. It is a 5-minute
video without any cut... with more than 17 people in front of the
camera. I am really looking forward to this

[2:33:58 PM] Nina Zani: Wow that is fantastic

[2:34:30 PM] Michael Klich: I have a few small animation films on my
vimeo page... just search for my name there
[2:34:43 PM] Nina Zani: What are you websites?
[2:35:49 PM] Michael Klich: You can visit me on michael-klich.de

love their music...http://thisisnaomi.de/Naomi/Naomi.html
[2:38:02 PM] Michael Klich: Facebook / michael klich...
[2:38:59 PM] Nina Zani: That is brilliant - Yes I agree, I like Naomi
and what I have heard so far....

[2:39:21 PM] Nina Zani: Now just one or two less work
questions.....what does Michael do for fun?
[2:39:34 PM] Nina Zani: Favourite bands other than Naomi?
[2:40:18 PM] Nina Zani: And if you woke up one day thinking - I
have had enough of the industry, what would you do instead?
[2:42:15 PM] Michael Klich: I spend a lot of time with my son...he is 7
years old, to be honest, I enjoy watch tutorials for my graphic
animation programs to get more ideas for when I produce work...
oh, and of course...I‘ve enjoy playing video games with my
cousin….I am a real grown up boy….

[2:43:46 PM] Michael Klich: I like many different kinds of music...

now I am listening to... cold war kids, jack white stuff, eels and of
course DIE ANTWOORD!
[2:44:18 PM] Nina Zani: That is such a boy think to do - play video
games....ha

[2:44:25 PM] Michael Klich: They are a very famous here in Berlin
[2:44:37 PM] Nina Zani: Happy to hear you enjoy DIE ANTWOORD

INTERNATIONAL DJ

Paul, Paul, Paul...., you are clearly determined and passionate

about what you do, thanks for being on my case, how are you
doing? The past weekend I listened to one of your tribal mixes and I
have to just say that it was brilliant.....a real experience and
definitely made me want to get on the dancefloor, how long have
you been dj-ing for and was this always the way forward for you?
I have been DJ’Ing since 1193 and my first real club gig was in The
Asylum club in Dublin which closed down in 1995. It was amazing
and I nearly did not play because of nerves, but I am glad that I
did. I played there for 6 months every Friday and Saturday and sold
many mix tapes etc….I also ended up playing twice a week on
Pirate Radio Kiss FM in Dublin until 1998.

What kind of stamina does one need, persuing a DJ/Producer

career? Are there any pitfalls?

It takes a lot of Hard work, persistance and lots of days of

heartache! But when things come together it’s all worth it. You
have to love of the music in you, otherwise you will give up.

Tell us a bit more about Redbox Records

I started REDBOX records when I returned to Ireland in 2008. I lived

in the UK for 7 years. I owned a record shop for nearly 2 years. I
then decided that I wanted to promote unsigned artist in Ireland
and help grow their popularity. Getting signed to bigger labels are
tough, so giving them a platform to grow is what made me and still
makes me happy.
What is your favourite style of music currently?

I’m big into Tribal House & Techno. I have played a lot of styles of
music but Tribal has a big resonance with me.
INTERNATIONAL DJ

You seem to have done a lot of colabs, what are the ones that stands out
the most?

I love working, with new people in the scene and will always look for this in
the future. At the moment I‘m working on an album with Nightwave DJ
booking agency (www.nightwavebooking.com) to help promote REDBOX
and the agency, and I‘m also working with several people globally to
promote producers and DJ‘s on some other albums. I cant say there has
been one I prefer, I love everything that involves doing new stuff with
people.

INTERNATIONAL DJ

You’re international career is on the uptake, who would you like to work
with next and where do you want to be in 5 years from now?

Yes, I‘m hoping things will look better in the near future. I‘m gathering a
good following throughmy radio shows and been the director of the label.
I‘m playing across the globe next year ; Miami, Brazil, England, Spain,
Germany and with help of Nightwave DJ Booking, so I‘m hoping this will
help me to play more gigs. I would love to play the Exit Festival, I think its
one of the best underground festivanl in Europe.

When you are not in the studio, what do you in your down time?

To be hones, I don‘t get much free time, the label and promoting myself
takes up a lot of time. Otherwise, I would normally go to the cinema or out
to dinner with my girl.

All time favourite classic dance tune?

Aah, that‘s very hard, because I like a lot of different styles, it definitely is a
hard one. In fact, one that does come to mind is, SKYDIV-FREEFALL &
RESSE Project-DIRECT ME (Sasha‘s 3am drop mix)

If you could re-mix or do a reproduce one of your favourite tune, what

would it be and why?

I would probably remix the above two tracks, maybe with a tribal feel to
them.

Words of wisdom to aspiring DJ’s / Producers?

Never give up, no matter what your into; DJ/Producer or whatever you
want to do in the music industry. Its a very hard industry, and even at this
stage, im not where I want to be, set goels, and do your best to stick to
them!It may take a long time to get to where you want, only the
dedicated make it anywhere in the music industry! The love of the music
will drive you! If it does not, dont bother!

The Reserve
Clubbing in Cape Town has just become the best experience ever. First of
all, I have not had a good night out in the city for a very long time. For your
discerning clubber, looking for a night venue that presents you with Class,
Glamour and sheer Hedonism, well let me just say this; Look no further!

The Reserve Club opened it doors earlier this year and it has not yet failed to
produce a good night out. The club has adopted international clubbing
culture and has got it marked down to the T, making sure the patrons are
filled with entertainment and of course the best music around.

I have to admit – seeing me dance on the stage at 4 in the morning is not a

sight you would find very often- trust me- I have partied the international
clubbing scene for many years (what can I say, a Party Girl at heart) and it
was about the only time you would have seen me throwing my wiggle – but,
without fail – The Reserve gets me boogying on that floor, like you have no
idea.

The boys Justin and Miguel (who has worked at some of London‘s top West
End night clubs such as Movida) are doing a suburb job at marketing and
conceptualising the best themed nights with their dedicated promotions
team. It is refreshing to find real promotion and planning going into events
these days. Something more clubs should take into action, I believe!

One thing is for sure – The décor, the venue, the staff are all phenomenal. If
you are visiting Cape Town this season, be sure to contact them in advance.
There is strict dress code policy and of course a strict guest list policy. If you
want to rub shoulders with all the Uber cool fashinistas and I am sure some
well known celebs….well…..then this is your place…
