Movement Of Particles

By Ng Wi Kiat, Zack and Muhammad

Our Experiment
To study the movement of particles, our group did an experiment to study which particles were too big to diffuse through the balloon membrane and which were small enough to pass through

Aim: To study the diffusion of particles Hypothesis: Particles can diffuse through a medium, depending on its size

The Technical Bits

Apparatus And Materials 8 balloons, 8 large beakers, 8 small beakers, pandan essence, air freshener, flour, milk, coffee, lemon juice, vinegar, castor sugar and 8 eye droppers

Procedure 1. The substance was placed in the balloon.

2.
3. 4.

The balloon was blown and tied.

The balloon was placed into a large and small beaker and left for 10 min. After 10 minutes, the beaker was smelt to determine if any smell pass through.

Glass

Risk Assessment

May break and shards may injure Dispose of shards in bin

Air Freshener May cause fire Keep away from open flames an keep at low temperatures

Liquids ( Milk, Vinegar, Lemon Juice etc.) May cause spillage Keep away from papers and electronic devices

Our Results
We shot a video to demonstrate our experiment on the diffusion of particles

Explanation
This experiment demonstrated the movement of particles by diffusion The balloon itself is not perfect, there are many minute holes that allow particles to pass through. Particles also range from different sizes, so that is why not all the substances passed through the balloon The coffee grounds, air freshener and pandan essence had small enough particles to pass through the holes balloon, so this is why the scent passed through balloon. The lemon juice, vinegar, flour, castor sugar and milk have particles that are too big to diffuse through the holes in the balloon and the scent remains in the balloon.

Evaluation
If the experiment was to be repeated.. By using a card of a fixed diameter, we could have balloons of the same size. Why? The size of the balloon determines if the particles can pass through the membrane of the balloon

Try the experiment again in a controlled environment such as turning off fans and air conditioners Why? The temperature affects the movement of the particles, thus affecting its ability to diffuse through the balloon.
