1- Equilibrium is the essence of all what we study! Comment (1 point) Solution Equilibrium is the foundation of any science .Each science sees it with different point of view and present it in away which suits the nature of the proposed problem. In the case of studying static structure, equilibrium is essential to model any structural problem, and it means that the structure will be able to sustain the applied external load without movement ,in other words, the external generalized forces equals the support reactions and the structure internal forces equal the external loads.
2-

The generalized Hooks law imposes a maximum value on the Poissons ratio; How? (1 point) Solution The generalized hook's law:

Applying a hydrostatic pressure: So the dilatation(reduction in the volume/original volume) will be:

for the problem to be physically acceptable the the volume must decrease,so:

5- A sample material subjected to compressive stress is confined so that it cannot be deformed in either the x or y-directions, as shown in the figure below. a- Do stresses occur in the material in the x and y-directions? If yes, how are they related to ; if no, why? (1 point) ) in terms of the b- Determine the apparent stiffness ( material modulus of elasticity and Poissons ratio (1 point) c- What happens if the material Poissons ratio approaches 0.5? (1 point)

Solution A-Stresses will occur in the x and y directions, because the material is constrained in these directions [Not allowed to move]. Applying Hook's law and letting ,we get:

Solving (1) and(2): B-The apparent stiffness: * ( ) +

C- if

,the material will act as a rigid body.
