The Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement Second Edition (KTEA-II) was recently administered. This individually administered test estimates school achievement levels in mathematics, reading, written and oral language. The KTEA-II covers four main areas of achievement, as well as several optional readingrelated subtests. The standard subtests that make up each of the four main areas or composites are: Reading Composite: 1. Letter and Word Recognition for non-readers, the ability to identify letters correctly; for readers, the ability to pronounce words of increasing difficulty. 2. Reading Comprehension the ability to read and understand sentences and paragraphs, and answer correctly one or more questions about them. Math Composite: 3. Mathematics Concepts and Applications the ability to respond orally to items that focus on number concepts and to apply mathematics skills to reallife situations. 4. Mathematics Computation the ability to solve math problems requiring calculation. Written Language Composite: 5. Written Expression the ability to complete writing tasks in age-appropriate format. 6. Spelling the ability to demonstrate spelling skills by writing words heard spoken and used in a sentence. Oral Language Composite: 7. Listening Comprehension the ability to respond orally to questions based on passages played on a CD. 8. Oral Expression The ability to perform specific speaking tasks in-context. Results are stated in standard scores; these indicate how this students score compares with other students of his or her age. Standard scores range from 40 to 160, and 100 is considered average. As no test measures with complete accuracy, a range of scores is provided as well as the standard score. As well as standard scores, percentiles are also given. To consider percentiles, think of this: a person who obtains a percentile rank of 35 on a test has scored as well as or better

than 35 percent of the people in the sample for that age. Percentiles within the 16th to 84th percentiles are considered to be in the average range.
