How Much Money Did They Save by Walking?

An activity based on the Christmas book, How Many Miles to Bethlehem? If we use current gas prices, how much money did each of these groups save by walking to their destination? Current gas prices range between $2.90- $3.50 a gallon or 9 - 39 cents per mile, dependent on your cars gas mileage. Calculate how much money would have been spent if the groups below had driven a Volkswagen Bug and spent 9 cents per mile. Create tables in your journal to record your data for each scenario. Show all work. Shepherds traveled from outside the city of Bethlehem into the city = 2 miles or 3.2 kilometers Herod and his soldiers traveled from Jerusalem to Bethlehem = 6 miles or 9.6 kilometers Mary, Joseph, and the donkey walked from Nazareth to Bethlehem = 86 miles about 138 kilometers Wise men and their camels traveled from lands afar to Bethlehem = about 3,524 miles or 5,671 kilometers

Challenges:
1. Calculate how much each group would have spent if they had paid 5 cents per kilometer. Calculate the cost for each group of travelers. 2. Calculate how much money would have been spent if each group had driven in a Honda Accord and spent 17 cents per mile. 3. Calculate how much money would have been spent if each group had driven in a Hummer and spent 36 cents per mile. Besides saving money, what other benefits did these groups get from walking? What benefits can we experience today from walking? On the other side of the paper, rewrite the Christmas story to incorporate the use of the vehicles listed above.
