The Football Association of Wales has appointed Gwyn Derfel for the role of Welsh Premier League Secretary, successor to John Deakin, who will retire at the end of the season. Derfel, who was born in St. Asaph and currently lives in Bridgend in South Wales, has been involved with sports broadcasting and management for over twenty years. For three years, he was responsible for launching and producing the BBC's 'Y Clwb Pel-droed' programme, which broadcast the League's highlights package on a Saturday evening on S4C. Over the last twelve months, he has also worked as a reporter and director for the League's current programme Sgorio. With previous experience on Radio Cymru, Radio Wales and launching the Sport Wales programme, Derfel has a very strong media background. Mr Derfel, 43, will start his employment with the FAW in the New Year and will succeed the long-serving Deakin from Monday 11th June. Continued on page 4

Shock at death of Gary Speed

Everyone involved in Welsh football was shocked by the tragic death of Wales National Team Manager, Gary Speed at the age of 42. Since his appointment only a year ago he has been very supportive of the Welsh Premier League, taking a great deal of interest in the Competition, being present at the announcement in August of the new Corbett Sports sponsorship agreement and being photographed with the sponsors along with the 12 club captains and his good friend John Hartson. I have personally known Gary for over 20 years and can well remember the first time our paths crossed, when I refereed Leeds United at Manchester City after he had just established himself in their team. I was immediately impressed with his skill and attitude on the field and it was no surprise that he went on to enjoy such a successful career in the top flight and gaining 85 Welsh caps. In my almost 20 years working for the Football Association of Wales, I got to know him well and found him to be a wonderful person, whose personality was illuminating in any company. It was no surprise, when he was appointed as National Team Manager and the performances that the players have produced of late are a tribute to his skills. He has proved to be really popular with the FAW staff, spending a lot more time in the Office than his predecessors. The shock and sorrow that we are all feeling at the moment is indescribable. Im sure that everyone involved with the Welsh Premier League will join us in sending their profound and sincere sympathy to his family. John Deakin

English commentary by David James on the Red Button service
Continued from front page Jonathan Ford, Chief Executive of the FAW, said on the appointment of Gwyn Derfel; "First and foremost our gratitude and thanks must go to John Deakin for his loyal and dedicated service to Welsh Football. "John has been instrumental in taking the League from its inception through to the most recent re-structuring changes of last season. He will be a hard act to follow for sure, but in our appointing Gwyn, we are confident that we have found somebody to take on this opportunity and deliver against the modern media and administrative needs of the League." Gwyn Derfel (pictured) said; "I am delighted to be appointed the League Secretary and very much look forward to taking up the position. The League and Welsh football in general is a key passion for which I will be determined to do my utmost to ensure that it continues to go from strength to strength." Interviewed by Dylan Ebenezer for Saturdays SGORIO programme Derfel put forward his thoughts on his new position: Im overjoyed to have the opportunity to work for the Welsh Premier League. Having worked with them for three years when BBC Wales produced Y Clwb Pldroed I have professional experience of how the League works. I have also followed the League as a spectator and can see a successful future ahead for the WPL but the FAW, the clubs and the fans need to work together to move it forward. Asked what his vision is for the years ahead, he continued My aim is to improve the product we have and that product is the Welsh Premier Leagu. We need to improve facilities, playing surfaces and increase attendances. It is not going to happen overnight but if all parties co-operate we can attain this goal. Low attendances are a concern but I firmly believe that clubs should build a strong link with their communities. Once a club becomes the centre-point of its individual community then youth players will create a basis for the future, young fans will bond with their club and their families and other followers will come through the gate. It may sound simple but that I believe is the foundation to a solid plan which we need to implement to see the League develop. The current two-phase format is the most positive development for years providing competition from start to season finish and we can build on this John Deakin, a former Football League referee, became the inaugural Secretary of the League of Wales when it was formed in 1992 and has carried out the role ever since.

Airbus Praised for hosting International

Airbus UK Broughton have been praised by the Welsh Football Trust Chief Executive Neil Ward for hosting a recent Under 16 Victory Shield International against Scotland. "The event was a great success and this was due in no small measure to the efforts of the club", wrote Ward in a letter to the Wingmakers' Chairman Paul McKinlay. "It was very pleasing to see a crowd of over 1,000 turn out to support the game, testament to the clubs advanced planning and marketing of the match. The result on the night helped us towards Wales finishing runners-up once again, a fantastic achievement"; the letter concluded. The match was broadcast live on Sky Sports 2 and finished in a 0-0 draw, with the Wales clean sheet being kept by Llanelli academy product, Gareth Owen.

Davies quits Saints

Mike Davies has resigned as director of football at The New Saints after 18 months in charge at Park Hall. But the 32-year-old stressed to the Club that his decision to quit has no connection to recent results, where the former League leaders claimed only one point from nine, including successive defeats to Bangor City and Afan Lido. "I think I can go with my head held high," says Davies, who took over management responsibilities at the club when Andy Cale also resigned at the end of April 2010. "I have led the club to runners-up spot in the Welsh Premier, the first-ever European victories against Bohemians and Cliftonville, and two League Cups." Davies replaced Cale in April 2010 and won the League Cup Final in his first game in charge against Rhyl. He moved into a Director of Football role with Carl Darlington being responsible for first team affairs towards the end of last season. Interviewed by BBC Radio Shropshire, Davies said: "I'd like to make the point that there's no problems with me and the club, me and Mike (Harris) have been good friends for a long time and will continue to be good friends. "The decision hasn't come lightly but I've made that choice and it's one I've got to live with. "A lot of people were shocked but the reaction has been good from my point of view, a lot of people sending positive messages, but for me it's about what lies beyond and what direction I'm going to go in next. "I'm very proud of what's been achieved, you look back and there's some fantastic memories, the success that we've had in Europe in particular, and I think that the group of lads I've been working with over the last few seasons have been a credit to work with and I'll miss every single one of them. "I will miss it, but it's time to move on and I'm excited about the future and what it holds. "I turned 32 a few days ago and I've learned an awful lot for the age that I am, I've got a long way to go yet and an awful lot to offer. "I'm going to switch the phone off for a week, have a holiday with the family down in Cornwall and come back and see what awaits. "I haven't thought about anything else but having some family time and that's what I'm going to focus on now, and we'll see what happens when I get back," Davies added.

Ian Walsh guest speaker for Llanelli game

by Matthew Burgess
Port Talbot Town were delighted to announce that former Welsh international Ian Walsh would be the guest speaker at the Gen-Quip stadium prior to Saturdays clash with Llanelli. In conjunction with the FAWs Legends Matchday Event initiative, Ian Walsh held a free question and answer session at the club before the match. Ian, now a leading commentator and pundit with the BBC, enjoyed a successful career throughout the late seventies and eighties starting at Crystal Palace before starring for both Swansea City and Cardiff City, winning eighteen international caps in the process.

Reds hit by Moses Injury Setback

Llanelli have reported that striker Craig Moses could be sidelined until the New Year with a hamstring injury. The Wales Semi-Pro International picked up the strain in the 3-1 home win against Bala Town last Sunday. Llanelli's Physio Chris Miller, hopes that Moses will respond to treatment but he could miss out until the league re starts at the beginning of February. Moses' setback could open the door for Chad Bond, who has been struggling to make the starting eleven since he was sent off last month.

Newtown host Racism Red Card Roadshow

Newtown Football Club's function room was full of eager primary school pupils today with the visit of fifty young children from our Park Lane neighbours at Hafren Primary School. The Show Racism the Red Card Roadshow was booked into the Latham Centre facility months ago and after getting a full briefing from Jason Webber and his roadshow colleagues, the youngsters met local players, Kieran Mills-Evans and Zack Evans, who were quizzed on their playing careers by the pupils, and also asked their opinions on Racism issues and what experiences they may have had. Obviously, the issues appearing in the national press surrounding racism allegations involving top british players, made this roadshow more relevant than usual. Newtown is pleased to play its part in helping spread the word against a most cruel form of abuse and adds its weight to the excellent campaign operating throughout Wales. The club thanked Zack and Kieran for attending on behalf of the Robins and thanks also to Phil and Nerys Williams who assisted with the event and the catering. Well done to the fifty Hafren school pupils who behaved impeccably a credit to their school. All the pupils were given vouchers to the Club's "Bring Your Parents" initiative which saw them provided with a free ticket to this weekend's Bangor City home match whereby each child can bring along a parent free of charge. The Club will be looking to extend this initiative to all the local schools over the remainder of the season.

Neath FC help Kick Violence Against Women into touch

Photo: Kris O'Leary & Lee Trundle at Cwrt Sart School to launch the white ribbon campaign Ahead of this weeks match away at Bala Town, Neath footballers Kris O'Leary and Lee Trundle took time out to visit Cwrt Sart Comprehensive school to help launch a campaign against domestic abuse on White Ribbon Day. Neath Port Talbot is preparing to take a stand against domestic abuse with a series of events to mark this years White Ribbon Day. Cwrt Sart pupils who have been working on modules covering respect and healthy relationships will be forming a human white ribbon and standing alongside campaign supporters from Neath Rugby and Football Teams and the Ospreys Rugby. Events will also be held in Neath and Port Talbot town centres; at Neath Port Talbot Hospital and at the Health Resource Centre in Aberavon on Friday, 25th November from 10am. The events aim to highlight the issue of Domestic Abuse in Neath Port Talbot, demonstrating that it wont be tolerated in the borough and that public, voluntary and community bodies are working together to raise the profile of the issue, change attitudes and encourage people in abusive relationships to seek help. The focus on November 25 will be on men standing together to show that they dont condone or accept domestic violence. A number of positive Neath Port Talbot male role models will be getting involved to help reinforce this message and show their support for the campaign: On Friday 2nd December Neath Rugby will wear their white ribbons and pose for photos prior to the match against Swansea at the Gnoll. On Sunday December 11th Neath Football Club will be doing the same prior to their match against Port Talbot. As well as going along to these events and wearing a white ribbon on November 25, people are being encouraged to pledge their support for the campaign by visiting www.whiteribboncampaign.co.uk/makepledge Colleagues from the Local Domestic Abuse Strategy Group including local support providers, Neath Port Talbot Police and health agencies are also undertaking activities to mark the day and all partners are ensuring that both women and men experiencing domestic abuse know where support is available both nationally and within the borough. Domestic Abuse Coordinator, Julia Lewis said: During 2010/11 2408 incidents of Domestic Abuse were reported to the police in Neath Port Talbot With everyone working together, we can organise and involve communities in preventative activities and alter the attitudes that lead to violent, abusive and controlling behaviour.

Id like to thank Ian Gwyn-Hughes for his help in organising this event and we are delighted to have Ian Walsh come to the club. I am sure that itll be a fantastic start to what should be a great afternoon of football at Port Talbot Town, said club chairman Andrew Edwards prior to the match.

THE LAST WORD

from John Deakin

After a weekend when football seemed to be somewhat irrelevant, with the tragic and untimely death of Wales National Team Manager, Gary Speed, the Corbett Sports Welsh Premier League table is as tight as I can remember for some time, with the top three clubs separated by just a single point. On Friday evening, The New Saints moved briefly back to the head of affairs with a 3-1 win over Airbus UK Broughton at Park Hall, but were leapfrogged by Llanelli less than twenty four hours later as a results of their 1-0 victory in front of the S4C cameras at Port Talbot on Saturday. Stuart Jones got the vital goal for the normally free scoring Reds. Those two sides are level on points, with Bangor who were surprisingly beaten 2-1 at Newtown being just a point adrift in third. The performance of the weekend was undoubtedly Afan Lidos 5-2 win at bottom of the table Carmarthen, where Mark Jones scored a hat trick for the visitors, who were recording their first away victory of the season. Andy Dyers side are involved in the only Welsh Premier League match scheduled this week, travelling to Aberystwyth, who lost by a single goal at Prestatyn, on Tuesday evening. That left the beleaguered Seasiders just one place off the bottom and they really need to get points on the board quickly. This would appear to be an ideal opportunity, but with The Lido enjoying such a good spell of form, who would bet against them. After that, like all Welsh Premier League clubs, they can look forward to a weekend of Welsh Cup action. The most eye catching tie of Round Three of the Competition is the repeat of last years Final, with holders, Llanelli travelling to Bangor. Theres very little between these two sides on paper and this should be reflected in what is likely to be a tight match. City are slight favourites in my book, but will have to bounce back from their disappointment at Newtown, where they missed injured skipper, James Brewerton. Another all Welsh Premier clash is the derby between Port Talbot and Afan Lido at The GenQuip Stadium on Sunday. As previously mentioned, its the visitors that are one of the Leagues in form sides, while Mark Jones side have slipped somewhat of late, although they do not to be having a great deal of luck. The games kick off on Friday evening, with an intriguing clash at Richmond Park between struggling Carmarthen and Welsh League side, Bridgend Town, who are currently fifth in their table and have aspirations of playing in the Welsh Premier next season. Theres another interesting game on Saturday, with Newtown, fresh from their win over Bangor, entertaing Cymru Alliance leaders and former Welsh Premier League Champions, Rhyl. Talk about potential Banana Skins. Welsh Premier League clubs that should progress are Prestatyn who entertain Goytre United, The New Saints who host another Welsh League club, Bryntirion Athletic and Neath who entertain near neighbours, West End at The Gnoll on Sunday. Two clubs who have to travel to feeder League opponents should also be good enough to go through, with Bala making the trip to South Wales Amateur League side,Merthyr Saints and Aberystwyth facing the lowest rated side left in the Competition, Cefn United. The remaining Welsh Premier League club, Airbus UK Broughton face Wrexham at The Racecourse, who also have an English FA Cup game at Brentford, leaving the outcome difficult to predict.
