    The Republic of China was founded in 1912 by Sun Yat-sen after the xinhai revolution. After sun-yatsen died, China was divided and Civil War broke out between the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party. The Communists won the Civil War in 1949 and the Kuomentang withdrew to Taiwan where they control Taiwan to this day.

    -Kuomintang was led by Chiang Kai-shek and the Kuomintang was allied with the Western Powers. -The Chinese Communist Party was led by Mao Zedong and was allied by the Soviet Union.

    -The Communists won the Civil War in 1949 and the Kuomintang withdrew to Taiwan where they control Taiwan to this day. This Civil War left much of China devastated. Mao Zedong Proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949.
