Informal Letter

What You should know


1. The heading goes in the upper right hand corner. It always includes the date and may, if you wish, include your address too. Example:

13 Melrose Avenue Springfield 12203 1 October 1994

2. The greeting Begin your letter with Dear ______,

3. The opening paragraph contains a statement of your reason for writing. Examples of common opening lines:

Thanking
Thank you so much for the wonderful ..(weekend/ dinner, etc.) This is just to say thank you for.

Congratulating
Congratulations on . Just heard the wonderful news!

Apologizing
I must apologize for Im very sorry for/ about

Expressing grief / sympathy


I was terribly sorry to hear that. We were very sad to learn that.

4. The body of the letter includes one or more paragraphs which may or may not be related to your reason for writing. Each time you change the subject , you must begin a new paragraph. 5. The final sentence or paragraph signals that your letters coming to an end . It often includes:

A hope that you will see or hear from the person you are writing to in the near future

6. The closing- We usually end informal letter in one of the following ways, depending on who we are writing to.
