BROADBAND ACCESS TECHNOLOGIES

Course Code: Course Objective:


To make students understand basics of Broadband Access Technologies in Wireline and Wireless domains. Completion of the course shall help in understanding state of the art technologies to include XDSL, Cable Modems, Bluetooth, Wifi and WiMax.

Course Contents:
Module I: Introduction Introduction to Broadband Access Technology, trends in communication, evolution of BB Access, media requirements, baseband, passband & broadband communication, definition of BB, technology evaluation as per TRAI, NIXI, & glossary. Module II: Wireline Broadband Access Network xDSL: working and types, CAP and DMT, DSLAM (ATM& IP configuration) deployment of xDSL, ADSL modems and business case . Cable Modem: Cable network, HFC Network, Coaxial cable band of operation, architecture, DOCSIS and IP, Different types of Modems, Installation, block diagram of Residential Cable Modem Module III: Wireless Broadband Why wireless BB, classification of Wireless BB, (WPAN, WLAN, WMAN & WWAN.) Bluetooth: Bluetooth architecture & application, Piconet, scatternet, Bluetooth protocol and its structure, Base band links,. WiFi: uniqueness, datarates, Ranges, transmission types and modulation schemes, physical configuration,802.11 protocol. Deployment policy. Hotspots WiMAX: physical topology, 802.16 standard, technical specifications and standard, OFDMA working, block diagram of OFDM system, Reception of OFDM performance tradeoff with 3G. MMDS: Typical MMDS system, constrains of MMDS systems & LMDS: PTP, PMP systems, services offered by LMDS Module IV: ATM & Frame Relay ATM definition, ATM connection, ATM cell, Multiplexing, ATM adaption layers (AAL1. AAL5), ATM cell forma (UNI &NNI), Virtual connection, Switching, Interfaces and architecture Frame relay: characteristics, frame format, FR switching, Network congestion & FR applications.
