David and Mary - A Contrast of Willfulness and Willingness

When David became King, he set about uniting the different tribes of Hebrews into a unified country with Jerusalem as the capital. Wanting to give thanks to God for the victories in battle that had helped establish the Kingdom, he had the brilliant idea and began making plans to build a glorious House of God, a Temple for God to dwell in among the people. But God had other plans and God would do the building. God Promised to build a House of David - a dynasty in the Kingship and that the House of David would last forever. How like David we are in so many ways, especially in our prayer lives. I am embarrassed to think of how many times, especially in intercessory prayer, I really tell God what I want God to do: heal this person, punish this evil doer, make a miracle happen - and not just happen - but often with detailed instructions from me as to just how God should accomplish my will - in this very time, place and way, etc. Too often our prayers are not so much for our understanding of Gods will, sometimes actually demanding Gods support of our willing - even when the willing is kind and loving and generally about wishing the good for others - just as David was kind, and loving, and grateful to God in his willing to build a House for God. Jerusalem was destroyed in 587 BC and it seemed to most that the promise would not be fulfilled. Still, the hope remained that a Messiah would come from the House of David. The expectation was fulfilled when Gabriel announced to Mary that she was to be the mother of the Redeemer, who, through Joseph, would be of the line of David. Gabriels words echo the words of Gods promise to David. Compare Marys response to Davids initial desire. Mary has no idea what Gabriel is talking about. She even wonders how what Gabriel is suggesting could possibly come about. But she utters not a word about what she would like, or how she would suggest that God accomplish thing things whatever these things are that Gabriel is talking about. There is no wanting or even asking for Gods help in doing her own thing. Many people today, in our time and in our culture, believe they can only find fulfillment and can only find happiness through doing their own thing. It's what I want that matters. In this Mary gives us a great example. She didn't say to the angel, Sorry, but I have my own plans. I want to do my own thing. She said, Yes! It's not what I want, but what God wants that matters. Let what God wants be done to me and by me!
