Kishore Biyani is reported to have said that the word

bazaar was mandatory for the name as they wanted to replicate the Indian mandi or market feel, and big came about because this was a much larger concept than just a regular market. It works on the same economy model as Wal-mart and has been successful in many Indian cities and towns. It caters to every need of an family, making Big Bazaar Indian's favorite shopping destination.

Most Big Bazaar stores are multi-level and are located

in stand-alone buildings in city centers as well as within shopping malls. In Big Bazaar, one can find over 170,000 products under one roof. Big Bazaar has created a strong value-for-money proposition for its customers.

History, Present and Future


Big Bazaar was started by Kishore Biyani, the Group CEO

and Managing Director of Pantaloon Retail. Big Bazaar was launched in September, 2001 with the opening of its first four stores in Calcutta, Indore, Bangalore and Hyderabad in 22 days. Within a span of ten years, there are now 152 Big Bazaar stores in 80 cities and towns across India. Future Group will open 25-30 Big Bazaar outlets by June 2012, and will invest Rs. 300-crore for the same.
