    The history of India can be divided into 10 periods. The earliest period was the Indus Valley Civilization between 3500-1500 BCE, led by the city-states of Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa. The Indus Valley Civilization featured large, well-planned cities with drainage systems and public buildings. Though little is known about their politics and religion, they had a developed agricultural economy and craft industry. The civilization eventually declined due to flooding of the Indus River. Subsequent periods saw the development of Hinduism and Buddhism under various kingdoms and empires, as well as invasions and rule by foreign groups including Muslims and Europeans. Today, India is an independent democracy with significant global influence.
