Calcium
Q: How is Calcium categorized? A: Calcium is categorized into minerals. It is the most abundant mineral in the body.

Q: What are some sources of Calcium? A: Most people get the majority of their calcium from milk, yogurt, and cheese. However, calcium can be found in vegetables too. Spinach, broccoli, and kale are three great sources of calcium. Fortified grains are another way to consume your daily dose of calcium.

Q: What does the atomic molecular makeup of calcium look like? A: A calcium atom consists of 20 protons and 20 neutrons.

Q: What is the function of Calcium in the human body? A: Without Calcium, the human body wouldnt have any teeth or bone structure. Calcium also heals wounds, controls blood pressure, helps produce enzymes and hormones, and is essential for muscle contraction. Without Calcium, our bodies simply would not function.

Q: What is the recommended Dietary Allowance for infants, children, males, and females? A: Male and Female (equal): Infant- 270 mg Children: 800 mg Grown Male: 100mg

Q: What are some deficiency disorders or symptoms from lack of Calcium A: Lack of calcium can leave people prone to bone fractures; this symptom can be a sign of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease that thins bone tissue and causes loss of bone density. Muscle cramps, convulsions, and abnormal heart rhythms can be a serious sign of another disease called hypocalcemia.

Q: What are the affects of excessive amounts of Calcium? A: Calcium toxicity is not very common due to the limited absorption in the gastrointestinal tract but it can happen. If the blood and tissue in your body contains too much calcium symptoms such as nausea, seizures, and appetite loss can occur. This only happens over long periods of time when calcium builds up with vitamin D. FUN FACTS! Did you know -Calcium was discovered in 1808 by Sir Humphrey Davy. - 3 lb.s of calcium are found in males!
