Meaning of technology: 1: Technology is the making, usage, and knowledge of tools, machines, techniques, crafts, systems or methods of organization in order to solve a problem or perform a specific function. It can also refer to the collection of such tools, machinery, and procedures. The word technology comes from Greek (technologa); from (tchn), meaning "art, skill, craft", and (-loga), meaning "study of-". 2: The branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science. 3: The know-how and creative processes that may assist people to utilise tools, resources and systems to solve problems and to enhance control over the natural and made environment in an endeavour to improve the human condition." (UNESCO, 1985). 4: Methods, systems and devices that are the result of scientific knowledge, being used for practical purposes, e.g. cell phones. 5: Throughout the twentieth century the uses of the term have increased to the point where it now encompasses a number of classes of technology: 1. Technology as Objects: Tools, machines, instruments, weapons, appliances - the physical devices of technical performance 2. Technology as Knowledge: The know-how behind technological innovation 3. Technology as Activities: What people do - their skills, methods, procedures, routines 4. Technology as a Process: Begins with a need and ends with a solution 5. Technology as a Sociotechnical System: The manufacture and use of objects involving people and other objects in combination.
