Factors influencing Decision Making

Cognitive, psychological, social, cultural, and


societal factors.

Cognitive factors refer to the mental processes of


reasoning and perception.

These decision-making processes mature with age

and experience and are influenced by an adult's brain development and acquisition of knowledge.

Factors influencing Decision Making

Social and psychological factors refer to those


influences from within family, peer group, or self.

Some cultural and societal factors which influence

decisions include religious beliefs, socio-economic conditions, and ethnicity.

Characteristics of Decision Makers

Thoroughness

Careful about detail Complete in all respects


Control

To exercise restraining or directing influence over To have power over

Hesitancy
The quality or state of being hesitant

Social resistance
Capacity to withstand social pressure

Optimize
To make as perfect, effective, or functional as possible

Norms
A comprehensive and fundamental law, doctrine, or assumption

Instinct
A natural or inherent aptitude, impulse or capacity.

Group Decision Making


1. Decision by lack of response
Some suggestion by passed by another one. Bypassed discarded

2. Decision by authority rule


The group may or may not discuss it but the chair makes the decision

3. Decision by minority
Railroading a decision; or making the assumption that silence means agreement

4. Decision by majority rule


Voting or polling and taking the decision the majority prefers.

5. Decision by consensus
Open communication and real listening, so that everyone feels he has had a fair chance to influence the decision; everyone in the group agrees to support the decision which is made even though it was not necessarily their favored alternative. 6.

Decision by unanimous consent


Everyone completely agrees.

What is Consensus ?
Every one in the group agrees that a certain
course of action is best for the group regardless of whether or not s(he) individually agrees with it.

Consensus

means sharing of differences, listening to one another, accepting the final choice inspite of the differences which may still exist.
