Biodegradable Stool
Experimental Composites
A Composite is the result of combining a ller with a binder, in an eort to create a new material with new structural and mechanical properties.

Steven McClain, Ryan Lynch, Ian Kenny, Chase Kahmann

What is a Composite?

Fillers and a Binders.

Fillers provide structural components to a composite, like rebar in a concrete wall; binders connect the ller material into a cohesive unit, like resin does to berglass .

Wood, Pavement, Car Tires Environmental issues

Are all considered composites because they utilize the combined physical properties of llers and binders. There are many environmental issues concerning the unsafe use of harmful materials in todays products. Non-biodegradable and non-recyclable materials create huge amounts of waste, while simultanously diminshing the quality of life in our communities with trash and unsafe vapors. the hazardous emission of VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) in household materials is a common problem, but it is also a problem that is commonly neglected. VOCs can have negative physical and mental side eects.

Goal of Research:

to create a composite that is environmental safe before, during and after production; one that utilizes the structural components of a quality composite and a simple design to produce a stool that is useful and practical.

The Sasquatch Stool: Composite Ingredients

created from locally sourced materials, our team created a plastic composite that is biodegradable and free of unhealthy chemical compounds.

Polylactic Acid (PLA) [Binder]:

from a factory here in the western United States, PLA is engineered from Corn starches and is entirely Biodegradable, with no emission of harmful VOC. PLA is purchased in pellet form and oers a low melting temperature.

Sheeps Wool [Filler]:

Locally Sourced in eugene, unwashed scraps create a structural and more lightweightplastic composite in out stools.

Sustainable Process
is necessary to a sustainable product. we used safe and practical molding process to create our stools.

Vegetable Oil is used as a sealant for our particle-wood Mold

Corn starch is the releasing agent
