Controversial Speech Outline Introduction

Introduction: All of us here in this room know that American love college sposrts. We tailgate for the Bowl games, spend hours rearranging our March Madness brackets, deck ourselves in the colors of our alma mater, and riot in the streets when we beat our rival teams. The beauty of college athletics lies directly in its irony. Our nation is completely drawn to the idea of professional games played by amateurs. Transition into thesis: With all the hours athletes invest into their game, many athletes and fans are petitioning that college athletes should in fact be paid to play. By paying college athletes, we break the divide between amateurism and professionalism. Thesis: Universities should not be focused on buying out athletes, but instead providing the athletes with adequate scholarship/financial aid and a high quality education for their contribution to the schools.

Body

Sub thesis 1: Athletics have taken precedence over education in Universities.

o

College athletics have become more focused on nurturing the athletic departments rather than the educational environment.

USA Today: statistics from the NCAA and the U.S. Dept of Education

Between 1995 and 2001 spending by Division 1 athletics increased by 25%, where as spending by the University as a whole has only increased 10% after inflation.

Only 40 % of higher education schools claim their athletic departments as self sufficient, while the remaining 60% rely on your money to stay afloat. At Division 1 schools, around 20% of the athletic budget comes from student fees says USA Today columnist MaryJo Sylwester. About 60% of all D1 schools rely on student fees to pay the athletic tab, where fees range anywhere from $50 to $1000 a year for fulltime students.

Transition: With the abundance of money the college sports take in each year, student fees and athletics income should not go to paying the

players but instead to preventing students from having to pay these obnoxious fees in the future. Sub thesis 2: Athletes receive plenty of money, and other students are being charged for athletic expense through student fees. o Although note all athletes earn an all expenses paid trip to college, they are in fact given a substantial amount of money to play for and attend their respective schools. CNN education contributor Steve Perry, colleges invest around $120,000 a year in medical help, tuition, training, and tutoring each year. Digital Sports Daily: The average Southeastern Conference school spends on average a whopping $144,592 for each student-athlete. Robert Brown (Virginia Tech): College basketball is much more pure than the NBA and a lot of that essence would be lost if they were paid. Eric Evans (Duquesne): Additional money to go towards benefiting other sports departments within the university and to help out the people that have partial scholarships.

Transition: Students athletes should be paid based on financial aid/scholarship basis and excess money should be tied back into the schools students and athletic facilities.

Conclusion

Conclusion: I just want to conclude my time with you with one thought: money doesnt make things better. If we pay athletes, people will still complain about the NCAA receiving too much revenue, and athletes will still complain that the NCAA is using them to make money, and nothing will change. Ending hook: I mean lets think about it, the Boston Red Soxs, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Miami Dolphins are ranked in the top three of their respective leagues for biggest payroll, but no one likes those teams anyway.
