This module aims to provide the linguistic and sociolinguistic background of Brunei by focusing on the various languages that are spoken in the country. A different angle on linguistic issues in Brunei will be taken weekly to give the student a multi-dimensional and well-rounded view of the linguistic situation of Brunei. The desired outcome is for the student to be aware of the sociolinguistic context in which they are supposed to live and work, to aid effective communication. Module Content :

The languages of Brunei (covering classification of languages and dialects, language status, language planning) Language and identity in Brunei (relevance to MIB, ethnolinguistic groups in Brunei) Language, social status and stereotypes Language policy and planning in Brunei (language in education) Minority indigenous languages (comprising issues of institutional and social support for minority languages) Minority languages in Brunei (focusing on non-indigenous languages including Chinese and South Asian languages, Arabic, Iban, Penan, Miri, Mukah) English in Brunei and Brunei English Language shift in Brunei Language and education in Brunei (a look at education policies affecting language use, Dwibahasa system) The Malay language in Brunei (Official language, the Malay dialects of Brunei, Malaysian and Indonesian influence) Linguistic diversity in Brunei.
