TACHOMETER

An Overview of the Problem Statement

Today everything is about SPEEDSo we decided to make our own device to find out what is faster and to what extent.

Problem Statement Explanation

OBJECTIVE : To design a tachometer device that measures the speed (rpm) of a motor. REQUIREMENT : You will have to design two module :

Sensor module: This module will contain sensors that will detect the speed of the motor. Display module: This module will display speed in rpm on any displaying unit like LCD or a BCD display.

SENSOR MODULE
This module will basically measure the speed of motor using different sensors. The sensors may include IR, TSOP, laser transmitters and receivers. Any other sensors may also be used.

Working of sensor
TSOP sensors detect 38 KHz modulated light and turn output low. One feasible solution is to have an obstacle like paper, cardboard etc. attached to the motor, keep the TSOP sensor in front of IR led (blinking at 38kHz) and detect output, the speed can then be determined by measuring the frequency of high/low of the TSOP.

Similar concept can be used for Laser transmitter and receiver, i.e. attached any reflecting paper strip to motor and detect light at each rotation as shown:

HARDWARE DESCRIPTION
Hardware provided will be as shown below , you will have to bring your own module to attach to flat surface attached to motor shaft.

DISPLAY MODULE
This module will receive data from the sensors and will calculate the speed of motor. The speed will be displayed on any displaying unit like LCD or a BCD display.
