Het Le Guess Who? festival schenkt
aandacht aan bands die de randen
van de popmuziek opzoeken en
biedt ruimte voor experiment.

et loopt tegen middernacht zaterdag als
het Utrechtse podium Tivoli zich heeft
volgepakt voor een concert van het Cana-
dese Suuns. De muziek van het viertal is
niet makkelijk te doorgronden. Elemen-
ten uit Kraut- en postrock, minimal tech-
no, jaren tachtig newwave en rock n roll zijn er in terug
te horen, maar de luisteraar moet zich er echt even aan
overgeven, want hapklare popliedjes biedt Suuns be-
paald niet.
Gelukkig maar, want Suuns kruipt steeds meer onder-
huids en brengt de luisteraar gaandeweg in trance.
Suuns maakt ook helemaal geenmoeilijke muziek, hoog-
uit andere muziek. Endaarmee is de grootste gemene de-
ler vanalle tientallenbands enartiestendie de afgelopen
vier dagen optraden op het vijfde Le Guess Who? festival
wel aangeduid.
Muziek die anders klinkt dan gebruikelijk, bands die
zeldeninNederlandte zienzijnomdat ze opeigenhoutje
geen zaal met een capaciteit groter dan driehonderd
man weten te vullen, vinden in Utrecht een plek. Het pu-
bliek is aandachtig en bereid ver mee te gaan op de vaak
niet makkelijk te volgen muzikale ontdekkingstocht van
de organisatie.
Suuns is zonband waarvande reputatie, dankzij enke-
le optredens hier te lande, al behoorlijk is, maar zon vol-
le zaal doet de band ook versteld staan. De verwachte cli-
max blijft uit, het spel blijft voor hundoengecontroleerd
en beheerst. De spanningsboog wordt knap gehanteerd,
de muziek sterft soms echt weg in schoonheid.
Een hoogtepunt, zoals een etmaal eerder Bill Callahan
eeneveneens stampvol Tivoli wist stil te houdenmet zijn
beklemmend bittere songs. Ernstig voorgedragen, met
zijn kenmerkend donkere stem, die bij iedere kleine bui-
ging al een tinteling veroorzaakt. Sober begeleid vertolk-
te Callahan liedjes van zijn prachtige laatste album Apo-
calypse, maar het klonk eerder troostrijk dan verdoe-

THE BOSS SLUIT PINKPOP AF
Bruce Springsteen treedt volgend jaar op tijdens Pinkpop.
Springsteen & the E Street Band sluiten het evenement af op het
hoofdpodium. Het is het enige concert dat hij in de Benelux
geeft. Springsteen is het idool van Pinkpopbaas Jan
Smeets. Dit nieuws werd zondag bekendgemaakt tij-
dens een bijeenkomst ter gelegenheid van het feit dat
Smeets vijftig jaar geleden zijn eerste popconcert or-
ganiseerde. Mojo Concerts heeft een nieuwe prijs in
het leven geroepen: de Jan Smeets Award. Deze gaat
voortaan jaarlijks naar een band, muzikant of instel-
ling die hemvolgens Smeets verdient. De prijs en de
bijbehorende 20 duizend euro worden voor het eerst
uitgereikt tijdens de presentatie van het Pinkpoppro-
gramma in februari. Pinkpop 2012 vindt plaats van
zaterdag 26 tot en met maandag 28 mei.
ONGERICHT ENTHOUSIASME
WINT CAMERETTEN
Vlaanderen heeft wederomgezegevierd op een Nederlands cabaretfesti-
val: de formatie Ongericht Enthousiasme is zaterdagavond in Rotterdam
de grote winnaar geworden van de 46ste editie van het cabaretfestival Ca-
meretten. Het Vlaamse trio won de juryprijs, maar daarnaast werd Kevin
Bellemans, een van de leden van Ongericht Enthousiasme, ook nog on-
derscheiden met de persoonlijkheidsprijs. De publieksprijs ging naar het
Vlaamse duo Lankmoed. De derde finalist, de Nederlander Diederik Smit,
ging met lege handen naar huis.
YOUSSOU NDOUR KIEST VOOR
POLITIEKE CARRIRE
De Senegalees Youssou NDour zet zijn muziekcarrire op een laag pitje,
omdat hij de politiek in wil. Dat heeft de 52-jarige zanger zaterdag be-
kendgemaakt op zijn eigen tv-zender. Hij heeft alle optredens na 2 janua-
ri afgezegd. Het West-Afrikaanse Senegal kiest een maand later een nieu-
we president, maar NDour laat nog in het midden of hij daaraan mee-
doet. Hij heeft een beweging tegen president Abdoulaye Wade opgericht.
Het 85-jarige staatshoofd geeft heel veel geld uit, terwijl de meeste Sene-
galezen moeten rondkomen van enkele euros per dag.

HET OVER?
Verenigde Staten #theMuppets
Dit weekeinde ging de nieuwe filmvan The Muppets in de Amerikaanse
bioscopen in premire. De filmThe Muppets kreeg zeer positieve recen-
sies. Het publiek stroomde massaal toe in het drukke Thanksgiving-week-
eind, ook al werd de laatste TwilightfilmBreaking Dawn - Part 1 nog net
iets beter bezocht. The Muppets, met naast de beroemde poppen ook
hoofdrollen van Jason Segel en Amy Adams, is vanaf 8 februari 2012 in de
Nederlandse bioscopen te zien.
Nederland #MartSmeets
Nederland blijkt al vroeg voor de buis te zitten: er
werd zondag volop getwitterd over het botsinkje
tussen Eva Jinek en Mart Smeets in Eva Jinek op
zondag. Mart Smeets noemde Jinek een kind van
de autocue-generatie, waarop Jinek fel reageer-
de en aangaf dat het onmogelijk is zonder auto-
cue het Journaal te lezen. Het tweetal kissebiste
nog even verder, totdat er moest worden afgerond.

Voor de vijfde keer vond in Utrecht de af-
gelopen vier dagen het Le Guess Who?
festival plaats. Het festival is indertijd op-
gezet om vooral de toen welig tierende
Canadese indie-scene ruim baan te ge-
ven in Nederland. Maar gaandeweg werd
de programmering geograsch breder.
Uitgangspunt is echter altijd hetzelfde
gebleven: aandacht schenken aan de ran-
den van de popmuziek en ruimte bieden
voor experiment. Singer/songwriters,
rockbands, hiphopcrews en technoacts:
alleen als ze iets bijzonders brengen en
buiten de gangbare paden willen treden,
is er plaats voor hun op Le Guess Who?
Ieder jaar trok het festival meer bezoe-
kers dan het voorafgaande, de zes
Utrechtse popzalen waarin de optredens
plaatsvinden waren vrijdag en zaterdag
meestal vol, terwijl ook het zogeheten Le
Mini Who? zaterdagmiddag succesvol
was. In winkels en cafs aan de Voor-
straat traden zaterdagmiddag voor een
enthousiast publiek diverse indie-bands
op, zodat bezoekers van buiten ook over-
dag muzikaal vertier hadden.
Minder voor de hand liggende popmu-
ziek, en artiesten die zoeken naar nieuwe
muziekstijlen, mengvormen en toch in
zekere mate toegankelijk blijven: Utrecht
gaf hen op deze vijfde editie van
Le Guess Who? vier dagen alle ruimte.

hem vertoond werd. Leidde nodeloos af. Callahan had
geen visuele ondersteuning nodig.
Low, de banddie opvrijdagoptradwel. Hunloomdreu-
nende muziek kwam dit keer (de band is hier als een van
de weinigenwel geregeldte ziengeweest) nauwelijks van
het podiumaf, wat tot rumoer in de zaal leidde.
Eigen schuld, stilte kun je ook afdwingen, zo bleek eer-
der opde avondinTivoli De Hellingwaar de Amerikaanse
folkrock band Other Lives een betoverend optreden gaf,
voor eenbijkans devoot publiek. Bezwerende muziek, die
veel beter uit de verf kwam dan tijdens eerdere optre-
dens. Geconcentreerde muzikanten en een buitenge-
woonopenstaand publiek was echter niet altijd voldoen-
de. Het hiphop duo Shabazz Palaces bleef donderdag-
nacht wel erg introvert hun jazzy raps prevelen vanach-
ter hun drumkit en laptop. Terwijl ook de publiekstrek-
ker van donderdag, Stephen Malkmus, weinig wilde
sprankelen. Niet erg, want er waren steeds alternatieven
genoeg.
Zoals Zola Jesus, waarvoor het publiek weer terug
moest naar de Oude Gracht. Een bijzondere podiumper-
soonlijkheid, maar de donkere galm en zwaar beukende
drums klonken te voorspelbaar neo-gotisch. En zo kun je
een enkele naam doorstrepen, terwijl andere in muziek-
blogs veel gebezigde namen op het lijstje een uitroepte-
ken krijgen.
In podia als Rasa, Ekko en het studiocomplex Dbs kon-
denzaterdagnogwat uiterste randenvande popworden
verkend. Wereldmuziekpodium Rasa had Le Guess Who?
aangegrepen om een ouderwetse klezmeravond te orga-
niseren, een genre dat natuurlijk vertrouwd aanbod is in
Rasa, maar dat nudanook eens eenander publiek wist te
trekken.
Nu waren de bands er ook naar om grenzen te slech-
ten: de feesthoedjes konden al op bij de energieke
klezmerpunk van Oy Division uit Tel Aviv, dat een razend
debat voerde tussen klarinet en accordeon en na de toe-
gestane spreektijd het publiek al spelend als rattenvan-
gers meevoerde naar de bar en foyer, waar doodleuk
werd doorgedanst.
De Canadese rapper en producer Josh Dolgin kon dus
een flink opgewarmde zaal betreden in zijn hoedanig-
heid van Socalled, een klezmerfenomeen dat bizarre
samples uit de Joodse liedcultuur live mixt met dub, r&b
en puntige funk. Een curieus project, maar heerlijk pre-
tentieloos en puur gericht op gekte voor het podium. En
die kwamgoed los.
Het contrast met wat zich ongeveer tegelijkertijd af-
speelde in podium Ekko kon eigenlijk niet groter. Hier
speelden de geluidskunstenaar Adam Wiltzie met de mi-
nimalpianist Dustin OHalloran in hun samenwerkings-
project A Winged Victory For The Sullen, dat live was aan-
gevuld met twee violisten en cello. Bezwerend waren de
lange trage lijnen die werden uitgezet door de strijkers
en van venijn voorzien door Wiltzie aan de gitaarsynthe-
sizers. De kleine pianomelodietjes van OHalloran doken
op als vliegende vissen boven een donkere oceaan van
oergeluid. Een moeilijk concert voor een volgepakte
zaal (zonder stoeltjes), maar A Winged Victory For The
Sullen had het publiek met haar spannende ambient
toch stevig in de houdgreep.
Gelukkig kon het zich vrij worstelen bij de zonnige
pop van Summer Camp, een duo van de multi-instru-
mentalist Jeremy Warmsley en zangeres Elizabeth San-
key, aangevuld met een drummer. Heerlijke Cure-gitaar-
tjes, een bonkige bas uit de synths, een fijne theatrale
performance plus een handvol heel pakkende liedjes de-
denvermoedendat we vandit vrolijke Engelse popgezel-
schap nog het een en ander gaan horen. Een kleine ont-
dekking.
In het podium van Dbs was het ver na middernacht
tijd om de gordijnen te sluiten, bij de geen streepje licht
velende doomrockers van het Eindhovense The Devils
Blood. De satanische band die zich besmeurd met bloed
aan het publiek wenst te tonen was op Le Guess Who? de
misschien wel vreemdste eend in de bijt, en het was pro-
grammatechnisch slim om de metalheads in het enigs-
zins afgelegen podium te huisvesten. Hier hadden band
en publiek het schimmenrijk alleen, en kon een concert
worden beleefd als een inwijdingsrite.
The Devils Blood, dat vorige maand de meesterplaat
The Thousandfold Epicentre afleverde, liet horen ook live
ver te zijn in het proces van vervolmaking. Niet eerder
klonk de band zo loeistrak, mede dankzij een razende
nieuwe drummer. Het gitaargeweld van Selim Lemouchi
en zijn bloedbroeders was loodzwaar maar kraakhelder
en zangeres Farida haalde het uiterste uit haar angstaan-
jagende galmstem in het prachtige en misschien wel
mooiste lied van de band: On The Wings Of Gloria.
Ongeveer op die vleugels kon het Le Guess Who?-pu-
bliek daarna eindelijk het bed opzoeken, het hoofd tol-
lend van een krankzinnige hoeveelheid nieuwe en be-
langwekkende muziek.

sich den 4. Mrz lngst rot im Kalen-
der markiert dann gastiert das
International Festival Of Country
Music in der Mannheimer SAP
Arena. Es handelt sich um das ein-
zige Deutschland-Gastspiel der
Reihe im Jahr 2012, das dabei mit
Genre-Stars wie der Country-Ikone-
Reba McEntire, die seit 1999 nicht
mehr in Europa aufgetreten ist, dem
Vokalquartett Little Big Town, dem
14-fachen Grammy-Gewinner Ricky
Skaggs oder den Hitparadenstr-
mern Lonestar aufwarten kann. Kar-

Neuer Vorsitzender berufen
EDENKOBEN. Eduard Kulenkamp ist
seit 1. November neuer erster Vorsit-
zender des Freundeskreises Herren-
haus Edenkoben. Er tritt damit die
Nachfolge von Klemens Zapp an.
Der Freundeskreis untersttzt die
Arbeit des Kunst- und Kulturzen-
trums Herrenhaus Edenkoben bei
der Vergabe von Stipendien an
Schriftsteller, Komponisten und bil-
dende Knstler. ya
Seine Eltern stammten von den
Jungferninseln, und die Mutter sang
ihm oft und gerne Lieder aus der alten
Heimat vor. Eine gewisse Vorliebe fr
den Calypso hat er deshalb heute
noch. Aber geboren wurde Sonny
Rollins 1930 in New York.
Er wuchs im Stadtteil Harlem auf
und war, wie viele Jazzer in den
50ern, vorbergehend drogensch-
tig. Allerdings war er auch frh ein
Star: Die legendre Platte Saxo-
phone Colossus kam heraus, als
Rollins 26 war.
Erst in den 70ern schien der Koloss
zu wanken und in seichte Fusion-
Kompromisse abzugleiten. Doch er
fing sich wieder, in den 80ern und
90ern verblffte er durch blanke
Solo-Auftritte mit langen Improvisa-
tionen. HGF

Dunkel rockt
die Seele
Man will ja eigentlich gar nicht wis-
sen, aus welchem verwunschenen
Wald diese unglaubliche Stimme
nun gekommen ist. Es kann nicht
wirklich ein guter Ort gewesen sein,
wenn man sich an den traurigen Ge-
schichten von Einsamkeit und Ohn-
macht orientiert, die Zola Jesus in
ihre Texte packt. Aber egal, ob es sich
um einen unheimlichen
Grimmschen Mischwald oder eher
eine dstere Monokultur aus einem
Andersen-Mrchen handelt, fest
steht, dass die 22-jhrige Sngerin
aus den USA bei ihrem Auftritt im
Heidelberger Karlstorbahnhof einen
bleibenden Eindruck hinterlassen
hat.
Emotionale Daumenschrauben
Tief und kehlig schlang sich die
Stimme der zierlichen Frau, deren
eigentlicher Name Nika Roza Dani-
lova ist, um den gut besuchten Saal
und drehte langsam an der emotio-
nalen Daumenschraube. Auch wenn
das neuste Album Conatus ein we-
nig heller an den Computern pro-
grammiert wurde als seine Vorgn-
ger und man bisweilen sogar seine
Beine in Tanzstellung begibt, spielt
hier die musikalische Haupthand-
lung immer noch im Moll-Bereich
zwischen New Wave, Gothic Pop
und tiefstem Schmerz. Die Songs
sind schon allein wegen Danilovas
Stimme stets eine Mischung aus
Opernarie, Indie-Hymne und syn-
thetischer Avantgarde-Nummer.
Ein abgedunkelter Treffpunkt, an
dem sich Kate Bush, Siouxsie And
The Banshees und Antony Hegarty
zum kuscheligen Jam verabredet ha-
ben. So werden Titel wie Hikikomo-
ri, Seekir oder Vessel zu wuchti-
gen Gefhlsausbrchen, die sehr tief
in dieser kleinen Person brodeln und
fr ein wenig mehr als eine Stunde
konzertanten Ausnahmezustand
sorgen.
Am Erffnungsabend des erneut
bemerkenswert besetzten Prt--
couter-Festivals ein musikalischer
Beweis dafr, dass Trnen auch tan-
zen knnen. bema

Wegbereiter Brahms

Zwischen Sturmlauf und Verst-
rung, Stillstand und Idylle schwan-
ken die Stimmungen. Die Musik ent-
stand in Baden-Badens Brahms-
haus. Wo Johannes Brahms im Som-
merurlaub wohnte, holte sich der
Komponist Hans-Peter Dott, der die
Konzerte der Kulturellen Veranstal-
tungen der BASF organisiert, seine
Anregungen zu dem Concerto fr
Klavier und Streicher. Gewidmet ist
es dem langjhrigen Freund Rudolf
Meister (Bild).
Haarige Herausforderungen
Der Pianist und Prsident der Mann-
heimer Musikhochschule nimmt
whrend der deutschen Erstauffh-
rung im Rittersaal des Mannheimer
Schlosses sehr verzwickte Passagen
auf sich, und auch das Kurpflzische
Kammerorchester steht vor haari-
gen Herausforderungen. Die Parti-
tur verwendet Bausteine und Tech-
niken, mit denen Brahms den Weg
ins 20. Jahrhundert zur Zweiten Wie-
ner Schule ebnete. Schnberg nann-
te ihn dafr den Fortschrittlichen.
Hans-Peter Dott verknpft die
Stimme des Klaviers eng und kom-
pliziert mit dem
sprunghaften, auf-
whlenden Gesche-
hen im Orchester;
auch diese Einbezie-
hung des Solo-Instru-
ments erinnert stark
an die Kompositionsweise des Vor-
bildes Brahms. Um einen angemes-
senen Rahmen fr das herzlich be-
grte Kleinod zu schaffen, greift Di-
rigent Stefan Fraas einmal nicht zur
Mannheimer Schule, sondern zu
romantisch angehauchten Werken
mit hnlichen Strickmustern. Die
1995 zusammengestellte Orchester-
Suite, die auf Klavierstcken von De-
bussy beruht, eilt kurzweilig und mit
einem leidenden Lcheln auf den
Ragtime Golliwoggs Cakewalk zu.
Die Serenade fr Streichorchester
von Josef Suk hat es den Kurpflzern
und Stefan Fraas sichtlich angetan.
Sie setzen in dieser teils herzhaften
und teils noblen Unterhaltungsmu-
sik ganz betont auf die Wechselwir-
kung von glhender Klangflle und
lyrischen Solo-Hppchen. Schwer-
bltiges wird entschlackt, bekommt
schlanke Konturen und zeigt sich in
schwrmerischer Schnheit. Die Zu-
gabe steuert Eric Satie bei: die Num-
mer eins seiner Gymnopdies.

Deutsche Redensarten: Mit ihm
starb . . . sagt man, wenn der Tod
groer Mnner eine Lcke reit, die
kaum mehr geschlossen werden
kann. Teile des Jazz, und zwar zen-
trale, starben schon mit Louis Arm-
strong und Duke Ellington, Count
Basie und Miles Davis. Und wenn
Sonny Rollins hoffentlich in immer
noch recht ferner Zukunft auch ge-
storben sein wird, ist danach viel-
leicht kein Jazzer zum Mitsterben
mehr da. Zumindest keiner, der The-
lonious Monk und Charlie Parker
noch persnlich kannte und in sei-
ner Tonbildung sogar noch eine gan-
ze Menge von der farbsatten, baro-
cken, groformatigen Gemlden ei-
nes Rubens ziemlich eng verwand-
ten ppigkeit des Gottes aller Teno-
risten, Coleman Hawkins, ber-
nahm.
So sehen lebende Legenden aus:
Mit langem, aber akkurat gestutztem
weien Bart kommt Sonny Rollins
auf die Bhne. Der Theatersaal im
Pfalzbau ist natrlich schon seit lan-
gem ausverkauft, es ist das einzige
Konzert, das Rollins dieses Jahr in
Deutschland gibt auch weil er bis
zu 50 000 Dollar Gage fordern soll
(zum Glck fr Enjoy Jazz gibt es in
Ludwigshafen die florierende BASF).
Zu Anfang allerdings beschleichen
einen Zweifel, ob es doch nicht
schon zu spt ist fr das ganz groe
Konzertereignis. Nicht nur, weil der
81 Jahre alte Meister tief gebeugt, be-
denklich wankend auf die Bhne
kommt (warum steht da nicht we-
nigstens ein Stuhl?): Auch musika-
lisch hat seine Gelufigkeit gelitten.
Als ginge es gegen Foreman
Aber Rollins kmpft. Wie damals
Muhammad Ali gegen George Fore-
man beim berhmten Rumble In
The Jungle, 1974 in Zaire: Er hngt
zwar gut die Hlfte jeder Runde in
den Seilen, aber dann, zum Schluss,
kommt die Attacke. Rollins glcken
einige Befreiungsschlge, er ver-
sucht in ein paar aggressiven Impro-
visationen nach wie vor, Schablonen
hinter sich zu lassen und den magi-
schen, spontanen Augenblick zu le-
ben. Eine Fortsetzung des Trumens
mit den Mitteln der Musik. Zehrt er
in dieser Hinsicht immer noch von
seiner groen Auszeit, die er sich vor
ber 50 Jahren gnnte, um das Saxo-
fonspiel neu zu lernen? Als er tglich
viele Stunden auf einer New Yorker
Brcke bte und noch lauter hupte
als die Eisenbahn? Denn Rollins Ton
kann immer noch sehr dominant, vi-
ril und kantig sein, ein paar ver-
quietschte und verbrabbelte Passa-
gen ndern daran nichts. Da rhrt

Drummer Kobie Watkins und

sind zumindest gute Antreiber. Der
Bass Bob Cranshaws aber gibt sich
stoisch bis zur Unbeweglichkeit. In
Wallung bringt ihn nichts, noch
nicht einmal die rare Mglichkeit zu
einem Solo sogar das hrt sich wie
Dienst nach Vorschrift an. Am meis-
ten trgt der Gitarrist bei, Peter Bern-
stein (nicht, wie ursprnglich ge-
plant, Russell Malone). Mehr als ge-
lufige, standardisierte Wendungen
kommen indessen auch von dieser
Seite kaum. Ein anderer berhmter
alter Mann des Jazz, den Rollins b-
rigens gut kennt, hat seiner Tour-

auf die Beine, aber seine Solo-Stre-
cken sind natrlich nicht so ausge-
dehnt wie frher. Wenn er nach der
Vorstellung seiner Begleiter sagt:
Sie hrten auch den groen Sonny
Rollins!, stimmt das eben leider nur
zum Teil. Zum Abschluss gibts Ich
bin von Kopf bis Fu auf Liebe ein-
gestellt (von Friedrich Hollaender,
nicht von Marlene Dietrich), das im
Englischen Falling In Love Again
betitelt ist. Cant Help It, murmelt
Rollins noch ins Mikrofon. So gehen
lebende Legenden ab.
Band vor nicht allzu langer Zeit mit
der Verpflichtung Bill Frisells mehr
Drang zu Querdenken und Origina-
litt verordnet: McCoy Tyner. Rol-
lins Mannen aber wagen sich auf
keinen Zentimeter Neuland, und ihr
Modern Jazz lebt von den wohlbe-
kannten Ritualen.
Zu den Ritualen eines Rollins-
Auftritts zhlen auch die kleinen
Funoten und Kommentare, die der
Leader nebenher blst, whrend sei-
ne Mitspieler agieren. Rollins selbst
kommt mit einem Calypso wieder

Alles beginnt mit Zahnpasta. Jeden-
falls bei Peter Licht. Am linken Sei-
tenrand der Bhne fllt das Schein-
werferlicht auf den schmalen Mann
mit der schwarzen Brille, und wir h-
ren erst einmal eine von Lichts m-
andernden Geschichten. Das gehrt
irgendwie dazu, wie die Predigt bei
der Messe, und da kommen noch ei-
nige mehr auf die Bhne bei diesem
Auftritt. Von der Zahnpastatube
schlgt Licht den Bogen auf mehre-
ren Seiten Papier zum Leben und
schlielich auch zum ersten Song.
Mit Wir sollten uns halten vom ak-
tuellen Album Das Ende der Be-
schwerde startet das Konzert des
Liedermacherphilosophen hier im
voll besetzten Heidelberger Karls-
torbahnhof und somit eine andert-
halb Stunden umspannende Dis-
kussion um Sinn und Nichtigkeiten
dieser Welt.
Andchtig, aber tanzbar
Peter Licht, Trger des Publikums-
preises beim Ingeborg Bachmann-
Preises 2007 und stets gern gefeierter
Wortknstler, setzt dabei ganz auf
die Mischung von alten und neuen
Titeln. Musikalisch geht es ruhig zu
bei den ersten Nummern Begrabt
mein iPhone an der Biegung des
Flusses oder auch Das Ende der
Beschwerde/Du musst dein Leben
ndern, doch nach und nach kom-
plettiert sich die vierkpfige Band
und drckt nachhaltig auf das Gas-
pedal. Gassenhauer und Liebhaber-
stcke wie Safarinachmittag,
Wettenentspannt und ja, auch das
nicht klein zu kriegende Sonnen-
deck (anstndigerweise in die Zu-
gabeecke gepackt) fehlen dabei
nicht und machen die Andachts-
stimmung komplett. Auch wenn
man dabei schmissig mitwippen
kann. Denn Licht gibt sich tanzbar,
mit rockigen Ausflgen in Richtung
Diskothek und so ppig arrangiert
wie selten zuvor. Konsum- und Ge-
sellschaftskritik spielen zwar immer
noch tragende Rollen in den Texten,
aber der Melancholie ber die Miss-
stnde und Missverstndnisse des
Lebens hat Peter Licht diesmal ein
buntes T-Shirt angezogen. Und das
steht der Sache wirklich gut. bema

Goodbye my lover (Auf Wiederse-
hen, mein Geliebter), spricht lieblich
die eine Hand zu der anderen, die
ausholt und in grollend tiefer Stim-
me antwortet: You stole my heart
(Du hast mein Herz gestohlen). Das
ist nur eine Szene aus der Tanzpro-
duktion des Kanadiers ric Trottier.
Im Mittelpunkt steht ein Clown mit
Schatten. Oder ist es doch eher ein
Clown und seine groe Liebe oder
ein Clown und sein leidendes Alter
ego?
Zu Beginn der Geschichte wat-
schelt die Tnzerin Anna Hein mit
auswrts gedrehten Fen und in ty-
pischer Clownshaltung durch den
noch dunklen Raum. Ihr Gesicht ist
bemalt, ihr Ausdruck traurig und in
einer Hand hlt sie einen Strau
bunter Luftballons. Schon zieht sie
aus ihrer schwarzen Robe weitere
Ballons, die sie ans Publikum ver-
teilt. Irgendwie ist das Szenario be-
kannt aus den vielen Clownsge-
schichten, die sich im Laufe eines
Lebens im Kopf eines jeden einnis-
ten. Und auch der Soundtrack tin-
gelt und tangelt sich eindringlich in
die Ohren des Publikums.
Im schwarzen Tutu und mit blo-
em Oberkrper tanzt aus dem
Dunkel ein weiterer Clown. ric
Trottier verkrpert ihn erst mit einer
Leichtigkeit und mit einem lachen-
den Auge. Unter einem schweben-
den Regenschirm er hngt am un-
sichtbar gespannten Seil und im
diagonalen Lichtschein, der wie aus
einem Trspalt am Ende des Gangs
zu entspringen scheint, zieht der
Clown seine Bahn.
Spter holt er aus dem Dunkel
seine Partnerin ans Licht. Sie blickt
immer noch traurig und ist zur Pup-
pe erstarrt. Im Versuch sie zu reani-
mieren, zieht Trottier alle Register.
Absurd und komisch ist sein aus-
ufernder Selbstmordversuch, wenn
er sich ein imaginres Schwert in
den Bauch rammt, es hin und her
wippt, dabei theatralisch grlt und
schlielich auf seinen Eingeweiden
Seil tanzend die Szene verlsst.
Selbstreflexion im Mittelpunkt
Ein Jahr hat Trottier an dieser Pro-
duktion gearbeitet, um die Clown-
Klischees auf den Punkt zu bringen
und sie zugleich in eine andere Idee
zu berfhren. Ihm geht es um
Selbstreflexion, sagt er im Gesprch.
Wo stehe ich als Knstler mit meiner
Kunst, wo als Mensch? Was ist kon-
kret und real, und was nur Traum
und Wunsch? Fr Trottier bezeich-
net die Clown Strory auch einen
Wendepunkt in der eigenen Karrie-
re. Der ehemalige Tnzer des Mann-
heimer Nationaltheaters ist gerade
dabei eine neue Kompanie unter
dem Label La-Trottier zu formie-
ren. Fr Mannheim und die freie
Tanzszene wre das eine Bereiche-
rung. Und fr den Clown, der zum
Schluss am Boden liegt, kommt die
Gefhrtin ins Spiel. Sie ergreift das
Mikrofon und riskiert einen Ton
dabei hellt sich ihre Miene auf und
die gemalten Mundwinkel sind end-
lich da, wo sie hingehren.

** Do you prefer the cold or warmth?
I prefer the cold, I like the struggle of
the cold. My last record especially was
inspired by winter and by ice. I moved to
Los Angeles and I really missed the cold
there, what the cold had fed me. I like
the sound of the cold, the wind and the
sound of crunching snow. Theres just
this strange magical peace in winter that
Im really drawn to, sonically, aestheti-
cally and emotionally. I think Im going
to go back to Wisconsin this December
just for the sole purpose of being there
in the winter, to see what its like again.
** What are the winters in Wisconsin like?
Im from the countryside and it gets
really cold. I remember once I built an
igloo. It was a genuine, very solid igloo,
I was proud. You could go in, it was very
impressive. I would play in there for
hours.

My favourite time in general is the winter.
I like the cold, I like hiding in warm clo-
thes. The mood of my album Viktoria
really goes well with the colder seasons.
** Whats it like for a singer to have a
cold?
Its the one thing a singer does not need.
Im ill right now and its so annoying. I
dont have any secret recipes. I believe that
you just need to let it pass, give it time.
** Please tell us your favourite winter an-
ecdote
My first skiing trip was a short one. Im
Norwegian, and the saying goes that Nor-
wegians are born with skis on their feet.
In my case those skis never arrived. My
boyfriend wanted to take me skiing and I
convinced myself I was good at it. I looked
like I knew what I was doing, I bought all
the equipment. But it was the hardest
thing ever. I quit after ten meters and fell
over a hundred times. I figured out I am
more of an after-ski person.
** How will you spend Christmas?
Ill spend Christmas with my husbands
family. Im getting married soon, I call
him my husband already. Itll be in July
next year, if it was up to me I would have
been a winter wedding, but he is a foot-
ball player so we can only do it off-season.

The devil has told you that!
Is Nika Roza Danilova in cahoots with the devil himself? The super-
humanly lightning-fast career of this 22-year-old hunters daughter has
certainly been bafing: She grew up in a house in the middle of 50 hec-
tares of woodland in Wisconsin, around which her father used to regu-
larly drape the heads of stags he had recently chopped off with his own
hands, so that the local wildlife would do the furriers work for him. At
the age of seven, she already performed operas in public. After high school
she produced three EPs and two albums in her at, which were adored
by critics after their released on labels such as Sacred Bones and Aurora
Borealis. At the same time, touring with Fever Ray and The xx didnt
distract her from nishing her self-nanced university degree in philoso-
phy. Despite the constant ow of industrial and Goth references mixed
with fantasy lingo and an ethereal meditative slowness, her new album
Conatus hardly ever reeks of patchouli and cemeteries. At any rate we
are hardly surprised to be allowed to meet her in full daylight. After all,
we have been aware since Twilight that the modern vampire doesnt
collapse but merely glitters in the sunlight P

Your dad was a hunter, how could you afford to go to university.
Did you have a scholarship?
No Im still paying off the debt. I had to pay for it all on my own, so I had
to take lots of loans to pay for school.
Studying and putting out records must have been a full-time job,
did you graduate from university or did you drop out when the
music became more important?
I graduated but it was nearly impossible. I had to do a lot of swindling
and talking to my professors, but I really wanted to graduate, especially
because I had spent so much money. Im so glad that period is over.
You studied philosophy. Who are your favourite philosophers,
and in what ways do they affect your lyrics and music?
Id have to say Arthur Schopenhauer. He made me realize that there really
are no rules, that your life is your own and that you can do pretty much
whatever you want with it. But at the same time youre tied to your esh
and what were supposed to do as a breed. He didnt inuence my lyrics
or music directly, but changed the way I look at the world and I write just
about what I see.
The song titles on your album are quite cryptic.
I always like the titles to be a song within a song, another way to commu-
nicate the theme of the song or what it means. They all just came really
quickly and naturally.
How important is the actual content of your lyrics? From liste-
ning I get the impression that sound is way more important.
With this record every song was so different. I wanted to use this record
to try new things I have never done before, things I need to get better at. It
was just like an exercise in doing that. Ixode for instance has no distin-
guished words, its just a made up language. Then there are other songs
like Vessel where I like the lyrics a lot. There are so many different ways
to decide what stands out in a song, whether it is the voice, the melody, the
instruments, the lyrics and the opportunity always changes from song
to song. Sometimes there are things that I want to say, but I just want to
express them through the voice.
In an interview earlier this year you said once a goth, always a
goth. Do you really consider yourself as part of the goth move-
ment, or is that just a label others have given you?
In that interview I didnt even say the word goth. The goth thing is just
too much of a cartoon. There is a lot of stuff that is considered goth that is
good, but there is also a lot of it that is bad. And also it les you under this
weird part of music that is very esoteric. People forget you exist because
you are led under goth.
The kind of goth most people listen to is patchouli-scented stuff,
reminiscent of the eighties, or even traditional medieval music.
Do you see yourself as an artist who is renewing the genre, ma-
king it approachable again, even for the hipsters?
Well, the thing that probably will always tie me to this term is that lyrical-
ly or conceptually I try to do things that are difcult. And thats just the
theme of goth, it is dark and challenging and not happy-go-lucky or care-
free. That is something that comes really natural to me, I dont know if I
could ever let go of that. So if thats what makes me goth, I might always
be considered goth (laughs). But I dont know if Im the one renewing
anything, I just do music.
Your new album is more pop than anything youve done before.
Can you imagine going further down that road?
Oh yeah, Im not afraid of pop music, in fact I really love it and I respect it
a lot, because its really psychological. Lyrically, I think modern pop music
needs some work but I have already made music that is so dark and
inaccessible that I feel like the only way to go now is pop, just because I
havent done that yet.
Do you have any affinity for the pop stuff in the charts?
The new Britney Spears record is really insane! The new Rihanna record
too, or Niki Minajs song Super Bass. They are so well produced. Seri-
ously, these songs are so good! When you compare something like Super
Bass to some indie rock band, its so much more just the care and time
and intimacy put in a song like that!
Well they have teams of very well paid producers and writers, a
lot of time and money ...
Thats the amazing thing, its one girl on the Britney Spears album cover,
but it is a producers album. Whoever the producers are, they should be
the ones having their name on the record.
What about your producer, you worked with him for the first
time?
It was the rst time I worked with a producer for an entire album. It was
really positive. He was the organiser, the one that got the shit done. I wor-
ked in the studio for the rst time. On the rst two albums I used software
instruments only, on this one all the synths and beats are analog. There are
real drums too, played by our live drummer, who originally comes from a
black metal background.
Can you relate to metal in any way?
No, I have a huge problem with metal, for instance when they do the
breakdowns its just not hard enough for me. I really got into wall-of-
noise music where the entire sonic spectrum is static. Its hard to get into
someone needling the guitar after that ... but I try really hard (laughs).
As a former opera singer, do you indulge in the rock'nroll life-
style when youre on tour?

Chris Martin has been spending too
much time with Jay-Z if this albums
hyper glossy production is anything to
go by, right down to those horrible hip
hop chipmunk backing vocals. Its all
surface, no feeling with an odd whiff of
Euro disco. Where is the band that gave
us Shiver?
David Lynch Crazy Clown Time
(Sunday Best)
The auteurs first solo album is what you
might expect f o re b o d i n g
soundscapes, twangsome guitars from
the bowels of Hades and unsettling
lyrics all intoned (bar one track sung by
Karen O) in Lynchs manipulated voice,
either sounding like an ickle girl or a
crazed hillbilly (or an even more
acid-fried Wayne Coyne). Throw in
some stomping dance beats and its like
Moby has stepped behind the red
curtain. As strangely addictive as Lana
Del Rey Mulholland Drive for your
ears.
Justice Audio, Video, Disco
(Ed Banger)
Now that pop really has eaten itself and
original rock music has run its course, in
order to be heard above the hordes of
mediocrity you have to be as OTT as
possible. Welcome then, the second
album by the Parisian duo a gloriously
kitsch collision of Daft Punk and Queen
with a nod to the FM power of 10cc. Or,
as my wife pointed out, the soundtrack
to a fight scene in Buck Rogers.

High Flying Birds
(Sour Mash)
Still as derivative as ever, just slightly
less so than the last few Oasis albums
and a lot less than little bros Beady Eye.
Bring on his psychedelic mash-up with
Amorphous Androgynous next year it
has to be more exciting than this.
Zola Jesus Conatus
(Souterrain Transmissions)
Like the anti-Robyn, Zola Jesus inhabits
her own musical universe. She serves
up glacial electronics, glitchy beats and
the sort of deathly atmospherics not
heard since Siouxsie, the Cocteaus and
Dead Can Dance. Theres a little more
light this time round indeed, the
throbbing goth-techno of Hikikinori and
Seekir is the sound of Lady Gaga letting
go of the commercial reins.
Magazine No Thyself
(W ire-Sound)
You can forget Joy Division, Magazine
were the most interesting band to come
out of post-punk Manchester. In an
alternative universe Howard Devotos
lyrics are pawed over by obsessives
while Ian Curtiss are reviled as sixth
form poetry at best. Howard and co are
back (though sadly no Barry Adamson
on guttural bass) with their first album
since 1981, and it doesnt besmirch the
towering back catalogue. Northern soul
beats, unsettling synths and Devotos
sardonic sneer and weird Burroughs-ian
words (witness the filthy Other Thematic
Material). Its good to have them back.
Girls Father, Son, Holy Ghost
(Fantasytrashcan)
The San Francisco band mix Beggars
Banquet-era Stones, the naivety of
Jonathan Richman and the wry rock
reinvention of The Strokes with a
dreamy Sonic Youth haze. I just wish I
couldnt compare it to others so easily.
However, the highway-riding riffola of
Die is a standout.
Strange Boys Live Music
(Rough Trade)
Yet another American band wearing
their influences on their sleeve this
time Dylan, late 1960s Stones (again)
with the loose gait of Talking Heads.
This lot are much more loveable though
as theyve remembered to write some
half-decent songs.

The Horn The Hunts songs are equally
magical and accessible, reminiscent of
long-forgotten folk stories, embellished
with futuristic sounds and
contemporary beats. They are
continuing in a long tradition of
analogue synth mastery their record
label, White Label Music is co-headed by
Ann Shenton, of Mute Records
electronic pioneers, Add N to (X).
You can see them on Friday at the Eden
Caf, St Austell. The gig takes place
from 8pm until midnight. Tickets are

A NEW online TV programme called
GigZone Cornwall where Cornish bands
and musicians will play live and be
interviewed has launched.
The first show was filmed at Tall Trees
Nightclub in Newquay and Vertigo in
Truro with performances from Fallen
Sky and Hold the Sun.

Abee, 16, currently a student at the
prestigious Academy of Music & Sound
in Exeter, has been described as
Lostwithiels answer to Adele.

Suitably eclectic musical line-up at memorial concert
Remembering John Peel
B
ELIEVE it or not its been
seven years since the death
of legendary broadcaster
John Peel and the annual tribute
shows dedicated to the great man are
taking place across the land
throughout October.
B-Side at Bunters in Truro is taking
part on Friday with a typically Peely
l i n e - u p.
Featuring indie, punk, hip hop and
electronica with bands coming from
as far afield as Leeds, the usual
rotating decks with a whole host of
DJs playing three songs each from
whatever genre they care to as well as
raising funds for the British Heart
Foundation, this years Bunters event
looks set to be one of the best yet.
Although not a headline type of
event, closing the show will be Leeds
The Chevin. Recently signed to Fierce
Panda, the Champion EP is their first
release. With the likes of Artrocker
saying theyll be as big as Two Door
Cinema Club, The Chevin are about to
shake the alt.rock world to its
floundering foundations.
White Powder Gold are a new
London-based duo who too are
looking set to take over the world of
indie. Their strong appreciation for
dub step, electro, R&B and hip hop,
makes them stand out from the
typical skinny jean-wearing indie
crowd. Drawing influences from the
likes of the Sex Pistols, The Beatles,
Sizzla and Beres Hammond, WPGs
sound isnt like anything else out
there in the charts right now. Their
uniqueness sets them apart from the
rest but theyd be happy if their CD
was filed next to the Friendly Fires
and N.E.R.D in your local record shop.
Also playing will be firm local live
favourites Hedluv & Passman who
have already ripped up the B-Side
stage twice this year with their Casio-
driven Redruth rap and energetic
dance moves. Hedluv (back when he
was a solo artist) made his Bunters
debut at the John Peel gig in 2006 so it
seemed right to see him back on the
bill.
Also performing will be Falmouth
University lo-fi electro rockers
Chinese Sky Candy and opening the
show in true John Peel punk rock
style will be The Surgeons,
Pe n z a n c e s legendary original punks
who are still going strong with a
continual army of loyal supporters.
T herell be surprises, maybe even
some tunes played at the wrong speed
in true John Peel style.
Doors 7pm, first band on at 8pm. 3 on
the door (all profits to be donated to
British Heart Foundation) get there

THE Eden Projects annual
talent show for young people
is now open for entries for its
2012 show.
Bright Young Things is
returning for its fourth show
on January 28, giving the
most talented young people in
the South West the chance to
showcase their skills on
E d e ns world-famous stage.
The theme for the competition
is gold, in honour of the
Olympics in London, and
entrants are asked to submit
pieces of art, film or
animation, dance or
performance, photography or
creative writing along this
t h e m e.
Entries from musicians and
bands are also being accepted,
although these do not need to
be themed around gold.
Entrants have to be aged
between 13 and 19. A full brief
for each category and entry

The Portland, Oregon-based
group have a heavy, Krautrock-

Pink Floyd slowly crashing into
Popol Vuh.
For fans of rock in the vein of
Spaceman 3 to the woozier end of
Black Sabbath this is not to be
missed.

Ordinary Boys farewell to Falmouth
THE Ordinary Boys were last seen
in Cornwall at a legendary show
back in June 2004.
It was legendary not just because
they had just hit the charts for the
first time but openers for the show
were the Kaiser Chiefs. It was a
brilliant show in a small venue in
Newquay with only a small
audience. Its since become one of
those I was there events and,
yes, Whats On was there.
Luckily for those that did miss out
on a brilliant live band all those
years ago you have another chance
to see The Ordinary Boys when
they head back to Cornwall as part
of their farewell tour in December
and play the Princess Pavilion in
Falmouth on Monday, December
12.
Frontman and unexpected reality
TV star Preston said: Its been five
years since the band played live
and despite having forged a career
as a songwriter for other artists
(look out for Heart Skips A Beat
performed by Olly Murs and Rizzle
Kicks written by Preston) I
desperately miss those early,
sweaty Ordinary Boys shows. I
organised some time off in
December to play some of my
favourite parts of the country from
those days and to give those songs
the decent send-off that they
d e s e r ve.
The tour will feature them going
back to where they started, with
performances focused on the first
record and rougher, sweatier
versions of some of the singles.

Taste of Cuba
at the Ecopark
WELL-LOVED by audiences up
and down the UK over the past
13 years, Asere are one of the
hottest bands to have emerged
from Cuba in recent years.
Drawing their inspiration from
traditional Cuban song, seven
young musicians came together
in the 1990s to create music with
a contemporary edge that also
maintained the feeling of the
songs performed by their
foref athers.
Staying true to an acoustic base
they developed a fresh sound
with inventive songwriting and
a soulful groove.
Across four albums and many
tours, they have continued to
experiment and evolve. They
have been working on a
collaborative project with
legendary drummer Billy
Cobham. Unfazed to be writing
and performing alongside the
man who once worked with
Miles Davis and whose story
reads like a history of modern
music, Asere have been honing
their skills and growing
through the experience, eager to
explore new horizons.
This time Asere are here with a
big difference, for this is an
intimate, entirely acoustic
performance, with the band
located in the middle of the
audience seated informally
around them. There will be no
microphones, no amplification
and no PA system, just a group
of young and very talented
Cuban musicians up close.

Ecopark Barn, Porthtowan, on

Hall for Cornwall

IF JOHNNY RAY was the Nabob of Sob then
Almond is undoubtedly the Empress of Eldritch.
At times this quite brilliant gig of torch songs,
chanson, Russian folk tunes and elegant covers
almost hit caricature such was the level of misery
and gloom. But, oh, such beautiful darkness.
With a superb band including former Sigue Sigue
Sputnik guitarist Neal X and cult transgender
performer Baby Dee on harp and accordion,
Almond eschewed the hits no Soft Cell here and
definitely no Tainted Love.
Instead we were treated to some stripped back
readings of tunes from his solo career, running as
far back as Marc and the Mambas to a selection of
songs from last years Variete, including the
stunning Lavender, a study of what it was like to be
gay in the oppressive 1970s.
Continually asking for the lights to be lowered to
enhance the mood, our charming host back to full
health and voice after the dreadful motorbike
accident which almost killed him inhabited the
likes of Scott Walkers Big Louise and Jacques
B re l s JAr rive.
There was a little light in Bowies John Im Only
Dancing and T Rexs Hot Love and a surprising nod
to Sandy Denny, but there were a few titters of
disbelief when he lowered the lights to pitch black
for Lou Reeds miserable but glorious suicide
anthem The Bed it literally couldnt get any
d a rke r.
The elusive Mr Matthews is back
INSPIRED by the likes of Bolan, Buckley
and Bob Dylan, Scott Matthews visits the
Princess Pavilion, Falmouth, on Monday.
Since his groundbreaking debut album,
Passing Stranger in 2006, his Ivor Novello
winning single Elusive and his acclaimed
Live in London album which was released
last year, Scott Matthews has developed
into a fine solo artist.
With a voice described as s o m ewh e r e
between Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley,
and a spine-tingling mastery of the guitar,
he looks sure to collect a few more
admirers when he visits Cornwall for the
second time his previous visit a couple of
years ago was a lesson in hushed, intimate
mu s i c i a n s h i p.
Influenced by a number of artists, most
notably The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Led
Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell, Marc Bolan, Nick
Drake and Jeff Buckley, Matthews has
embarked on a number of sell-out tours
and has been fortunate enough to tour
with some of the world's most respected
artists, including Foo Fighters, Snow
Patrol, Rufus Wainwright, Tori Amos and
Robert Plant (who appeared on his last
album).
His third album What the Night Delivers,
which sees Scott adding piano to his
armoury, was released last month.

Here come the young men two very different talents
Jud Vandy Children Lost In Fantasy 1 & 2
Over the years Cambornes Jud Vandy has blown
me away with his singular songwriting vision,
which has now exploded into two mindwarping
albums filled with more ideas than most
musicians explore over ten.
The first CD is Jud on everything vo c a l s,
guitars, bass, percussion, MIDI and more. The
only help he gets is Mella Cottons haunting
vocals on the sublime Liquid Night.
This is psychedelic pop with nods to everyone
from The Cure and Syd Barrett to Bombay Bicycle
Club and Foals, but mostly it sounds like Jud
Va n dy.
Opener Edison Fair is as madly addictive as
primetime Klaxons (complete with well-placed
Hans Zimmer samples) while its Waltzy Reprise is
nothing so much as Cornwalls answer to Animal
Collective; blissed out chorale madness.
The second volume is more of a band sound with
Jud joined by Murray Styles on bass and Dyl
Jones on drums.
Opening song Through Walls is an apocalyptic
beast redolent of cult 1990s guitar explorers
Quicksand while the successor demonstrates how
wildly Juds songwriting can veer Ghost On The
Backstreet sounds like the dark sweetness of
Stone Roses on a dubstep tip.
T heres an almost gothic darkness here without
the dreaded goth element. Imagine Nine Inch
Nails with an English folk edge and thats the
likes of Spill The Mute.
Jud really is an ingenious songwriter who needs
to be heard by a wider audience.
Seamas Carey My Grannys House
Many music fans in Cornwall will already be
acquainted with this six-track EP as Falmouths
Seamas (former member of The Busketeers and
one half of Underdog with poet Callum Mitchell).
He has been touring these songs in a multi-media
performance with projector, screen and accordion
in village halls, cafs and even care homes.
The latter is a fitting venue as the songs are
intensely personal emotional yet amusing
about the house his
granny now lives in
alone after her
husband, former head
of painting at
Falmouth School of
Art Francis Hewlett,
succumbed to
dementia and is now
living in a nursing
h o m e.
The music is very
much in vogue
imagine a more Gallic
take on Mumford &
Sons folk-ridden pop
topped with Seamas
silken croon wh i l e
the lyrics will appeal
to anyone with or
without a granny.
Seamas, who is about
to accompany Bash
Street Theatre on tour, will provide live piano to a
host of silent films at Falmouths Poly on
Thursday, October 27. A very talented young man.

Mit Conatus gengt Nika die-
sem Anspruch. Wie schon die Al-
ben zuvor ist es ein in sich stim-
miges Werk, dessen Songs einzeln
zwar wirken, mehr aber noch im
Ganzen. Und so soll es auch sein.
Ich knnte keine Kompilation
unabhngiger Lieder machen.
Die Stcke meiner Alben sind zu-
sammenhngende Gruppen. Da
ich alle hintereinander in einer
bestimmten Phase meines Lebens
geschrieben habe, steckt in ihnen
auch die gleiche Energie eine et-
was verstrende, nicht sofort zu-
gngliche, aber durchweg frhli-
che.
Oder, wie sie auch sagt: ober-
flchlich khl, aber eigentlich
herzenswarm eine Kombinati-
on, die selten und ein wahres

Zola Jesus die Verbindung von Experimentier- und Partyfreudigkeit.

Wisconsin ist nicht gerade be-
kannt fr seine Knstler. Den
Staat im Norden der USA prgt
vielmehr seine landwirtschaftli-
che Idylle. Doch auch dort ent-
steht Kunst, wie die Musikerin
Zola Jesus mit ihrem bereits drit-
ten Album in drei Jahren erneut
unter Beweis stellt.
In Wisconsin aufzuwachsen,
war vllig normal fr mich, weil
es alles war, was ich kannte. Aber
richtig: Man lebt dort sehr iso-
liert. Schon frh

ren zur Mu-
sik. Gesungen hat sie schon als
kleines Mdchen. Nach und nach
brachte sie sich das Spielen von
Gitarre, Klavier und anderen In-
strumenten bei.
Ihr Knstlername geht zurck
auf Emile Zola und Jesus Christus
Der Gesang stand fr sie aber
stets an erster Stelle: Opernsnge-
rin wollte sie werden. Das war
fr mich der natrlichste Impuls,
weil ich immer schon einen Beruf
frs Leben aus dem Singen ma-
chen wollte. Unbeeindruckt von
den Trends der Charts hrte sie
sich quer durch die Genres. Alles
war eins, solange es Spa machte
ob Popmusik, Oper, Punk,
Rock oder Folk.
Mit acht, neun Jahren nahm
die heute 22-Jhrige klassische
Gesangsstunden und gab sich
bald darauf ihr Pseudonym Zola
Jesus, das sich aus den Namen des
franzsischen Schriftstellers Emi-
le Zola und Jesus Christus zusam-
men setzt. Warum? Keine Ah-
nung. Ich war noch zu jung, um
darber nachzudenken. Es klang
einfach gut.
Obwohl sie Musikerin werden
wollte, studierte sie zunchst Phi-
losophie und Franzsisch an der
University of Wisconsin-Madi-
son zwei Fachbereiche, fr die
sie sich immer schon interessier-
te. Neben dem Studium machte
sie weiter Musik und schrieb ihr
Debtalbum The Spoils, das sie
2008 aufnahm und 2009 ber Sa-
cred Bones Records, das Label ei-
nes Freundes, verffentlichte.
Nach dem letztjhrigen Werk
Stridulum II liegt nun das dritte
Album Conatus (lat.: auf et-
was ausgerichtet sein) vor, das
ihren Stil auf den Punkt bringt.
Eigentlich haben wir aufnahme-
technisch wenig verndert. Dass
meine Stimme heute vielleicht et-
was besser klingt, liegt daran, dass
ich in den vergangenen Jahren
viel an ihr gearbeitet habe.
Multitasking ist fr Zola Jesus eine
Grundvoraussetzung als Knstlerin
Nicht nur das. Ihre Fhigkeiten
als Produzentin hat sie ebenfalls
verbessert. Multitasking auf allen
Ebenen des Musikerdaseins sei
eine Notwendigkeit, um das Beste
aus sich herauszuholen. Fr Co-
natus wollte ich etwas schaffen,
das jenseits allem Vorherigen sein
wrde. Dabei habe ich mich vl-
lig frei gefhlt, sagt sie.
Ihr steigender Erfolg als Zola
Jesus macht Nika stolz, aber auch

VOGUE HOMMES INTERNATIONAL
MUSIQUE
La scne se droule dans un club parisien dont le public
est dhabitude largement constitu de jeunes gens aux
allures sombres et srieuses, qui viennent l couter
de la musique lectronique ou du rock indpendant.
Mais, ce soir, ils sont dboussols par un duo amri-
cain, Ford et Lopatin, qui passe un morceau inattendu :
le tube Maria Magdalena de Sandra, auteur dans
les annes1980 de quelques ritournelles enttantes.
Son morceau est ralenti, traqu de lintrieur pour les
obliger danser au pas, comme dans un rve. Il est sub-
tilement rinvent pour 2011, rhabilitant la chanteuse
allemande devant un public stupfait, mais conquis.
Ford et Lopatin sont, la manire dautres artistes
de leur gnration (les 20-30ans), obsds par les
tubes des annes1980 et font tout pour en retrouver
lnergie et lessence. Une tendance dcrite par le jour-
naliste Simon Reynolds dans son livre Retromania.
Selon lui, la musique, surtout la pop, est devenue dans
les annes rcentes, obnubile par son propre pass,
quelle idoltre outrance. Ce qui se traduit par la
reformation de groupes dits cultes, des rditions
luxueuses, mais aussi la rhabilitation de musiciens
ou chanteurs longtemps dconsidrs.
Lopatin, qui enregistre en solo sous le nom de
Oneohtrix Point Never, a longtemps diffus sur You-
Tube des vidos faites partir de boucles de tubes
estampills pour les radios FM. Il sest ainsi empar de
quelques secondes dun vieux titre du crooner eighties
Chris de Burgh pour en faire une mini-ritournelle
accompagnant des images satures de couleurs psy-
chdliques. Lopatin avoue que cest une faon pour
lui de redonner un but la musique pop... Isoler
certains passages musicaux ou vocaux permet de faire
surgir de nouvelles possibilits narratives.
Ford et Lopatin ne cdent jamais totalement au
kitsch ou la nostalgie gratuite. Ils sen emparent pour
inventer une musique neuve. Channel Pressures, leur
album sorti au dbut de lt, est construit sur un joli
concept : lhistoire dun jeune garon qui aurait subi
un lavage de cerveau par une tlvision gante. Un
pitch voquant David Cronenberg ou Philip K.Dick,
et qui, au-del de lanecdote, pointe une volont
nouvelle des artistes pop de composer des albums
conceptuels. La pop des annes2010 est habite par
une volont de faire danser tout en racontant des c-
tions soniques, qui sollicitent limagination autant
quun roman ou un lm. Le rcent album New Age
Outlaws de Dylan Ettinger est, lui, une variation sur
Blade Runner, le lm de Ridley Scott adapt de Philip
K.Dick. Il y narre en musique une histoire de contre-
utopie futuriste, construite avec des synthtiseurs des
annes1970 ou1980 devenus les nouveaux ftiches
la mode pour les jeunes groupes pop, qui en ont oubli
les guitares. La musique dEttinger voque bien, en
plus hypnotique, la bande originale du lm, compose
avec les mmes instruments lectroniques.
Cette inuence de la science-ction se retrouve
aussi chez Zola Jesus. Depuis Los Angeles, cette jeune
chanteuse mle son obsession pour la SF un amour
immodr de la new wave et de la pop lectronique
dil y a trente ans. Elle a nomm lun de ses disques,
Stridulum, daprs un lm italien oubli. Cest un
de ces lms perdus quon ne trouve plus quen VHS,
de la SF trange, avec des scnes post- apocalyptiques
et une imagerie splendide. Jaime linventivit de la
science-ction, le fait de vouloir prdire le futur,
quoi cela ressemblera , avoue-t-elle.
Zola Jesus et ses contemporains semparent des
fragments de la pop culture dune poque quils nont
pas pu connatre et en font la matire premire de leur
musique. Une musique qualie par le magazine
anglais musical The Wire de pop hypnagogique ,
cest--dire faite dimages et de visions comme perues
dans un demi-sommeil, au moment de sendormir. Une
musique qui provoque une vritable renaissance : un
il sur le rtroviseur des musiques dhier, ces jeunes
gens inventent une modernit radicale, une forme toute
neuve de musicalit, entre chien et loup, entre pass
ftichis et futur lumineux.

Ces dernires annes,
la MUSIQUE
est devenue une affaire de
NOSTALGIE.

nach Berlin. Sie wollte in Europa
leben, und Berlinmag ja Knstler
aus aller Welt. So konnte sie un-
gestrt ihre ganz eigenenTraum-
landschaften entwickeln, Ge-
ruschkulissen entwerfen und
manches Mal sanft dazu singen.
Nun erscheint ihr zweites Album
Alphabet Dream Noise. Als
DJs, die danach fr die richtige
Partystimmung sorgen, geben
sich Markus Detmer und die Ge-
brder Teichmann die Ehre.

Zugegeben: Letztes Jahr auf dem
Berlin Festival, zu einer Uhrzeit,
zu der selbst die ganz Kleinen
zum Konzert mitdrfen und bei
strahlendem Sonnenschein auf
dem Tempelhofer Flugfeld, da
war ihr Auftritt ein wenig ab-
surd. Ihre Musik, die Intimitt
und dunkle Rume braucht, ihre
Stimme, die eher anSchmerzens-
schreie und tief empfundene
Trauer erinnert, kamen in dem
lichtdurchfluteten Hangar nicht
zurGeltungwieauch?Dennoch,
die Ahnung, dass man es hier mit
einer ernst zunehmendenKnst-
lerin zu tun hat, musste man
schondamals bekommen.
Nun erscheint mit Conatus
die dritte Platte der aus Madison
in Wisconsin stammenden Nika
Roza Danilova alias Zola Jesus,
die schon als Kind am liebsten
OpernsangundsichinihremPhi-
losophiestudium mit Nietzsche,
Dostojewski und Schopenhauer
beschftigte. Auchder amerikani-
sche Horror-Schriftsteller H.P.
Lovecraft spielt im Werk der
22-jhrigen eine nicht unbedeu-
tende Rolle. So benannte sie ihr
vielbeachtetes 2010er Album
Stridulum II nach einem von
Lovecraft inspirierten italieni-
schen Science-Fiction-Film aus
den siebziger Jahren. Die neuen
Stcke voller dster-mystischer
Electronica sind erwachsener ge-
wordenund weisen Parallelen zu

Nika Roza Danilova ist 22
Jahre alt und hat fr ihr jun-
ges Alter bereits einiges er-
reicht. Die russisch-ameri-
kanische Musikerin hat zwei
Alben auf dem Markt, zudem
mehrere Minialben und Sin-
gles. Mit jeder Verffentli-
chung wurde der Kreis ihrer
Fans grer. Hilfreich war
ihr dabei auch eine gemein-
same Europatournee mit
Karin Dreijer Andersson ali-
as Fever Ray. Beide zielen
mit ihrem Gothic-Electro/
Synthiepop auf ein nahezu
deckungsgleiches Publikum.
Wobei Danilova, die sich hin-
ter dem Knstlernamen Zola
Jesus versteckt, auch eine
musikalische Nhe zu Kate
Bush, Florence & The Ma-
chine, Lisa Gerrard und Si-
ouxsie And The Banshees
nachgesagt wird.
All diese Vergleiche sind
jedoch nur vage Anhalts-
punkte, um den Sound von
Zola Jesus zu umschreiben.
Denn dieser befindet sich in
einem stetigen Prozess, mu-
tiert immer wieder und ent-
wickelt sich in
andere Rich-
tungen weiter.
Anlsslich der
Verffentli-
chung ihres
dritten Albums
Conatus
(Souterrain
Transmissions/
Rough Trade)
zieht ihre Plat-
tenfirma nun den Schluss,
dass Danilova sich nach dem
Pop-Experiment Stridulum
II, so der Titel ihres zweiten
Albums aus dem letzten
Jahr, musika-
lisch zurckge-
zogen habe.
Der Songtitel
Hikikomori
bezeichne
schlielich im
Japanischen
Menschen, die
sich zuhause
einschlieen
und den Kon-
takt mit anderen minimie-
ren beziehungsweise ganz
meiden, so die Argumentati-
on.
Ganz fr sich hat Danilova
in den letzten Monaten die
Musik nicht gemacht. Sie
will schon gehrt werden
und hat elf neue dstere, epi-
sche Songs komponiert. Co-
natus ist brigens Latei-
nisch und heit bersetzt
Wagnis, Anstrengung oder
Drang, was dem Sich-ver-
schlieen eher widerspricht.
Sie scheint also hin und her
gerissen zu sein.
Aber genug der Spekula-
tionen und hin zu den Fak-
ten: Conatus ist nicht so
eingngig wie Stridulum
II, verschlossener sozusa-
gen, enttuscht aber ob sei-
ner Intensitt und Dichte
nicht. Was nicht heit, dass
ihr nicht auch ein Hit gelun-
gen ist. Das flotte Seekir
entpuppt sich als ein solcher.
Ebenso die vorab verffent-
lichte Single Vessel, deren
atmosphrischer Industrial-
Pop, von Beats, Synthi, Piano
und Samples erzeugt, den
Zuhrer in eine Schauer-
Tagtraumwelt zu entfhren
vermag. Das bereits ange-
sprochene Hikikomori ist,
nebenbei, nicht annhernd
das dsterste Stck auf die-
sem vortrefflichen Album.
Wer ganz tief in die undurch-
sichtige Seele Danilovas ein-
tauchen will, sollte Skin
oder Collapse hren.

Was hat diese Band nur
falsch gemacht, dass ihre Al-
ben hierzulande immer mit
gehriger Versptung er-
scheinen? Bei A Mouthful
waren es zweieinhalb Jahre,
bei Both Ways Open Jaws
(Naive/Indigo) sind es
knapp ber sieben Monate.
So viel Mist wird ungefiltert
auf den deutschen Markt ge-
schleust, da muss doch Zeit,
Geld und Wille sein, zeitnah
ein anspruchsvolles Indie-
pop-Album zu lizensieren,
oder?
Aber zum Thema: Das fin-
nisch-franzsische Duo The
D verzaubert einen mit ei-
gensinnigen Songs irgendwo
zwischen PJ Harveys, Bjrk,
Portishead, CocoRosie und
psychedelischen wie pro-
gressiven Einflssen. Auch
wieder ein Album, das nicht
beim ersten Hren zndet.
Der Detailreichtum ihrer
auch Freak Pop titulierten
Musik erfordert ein gewisses
Ma an Aufmerksamkeit
und Geduld.
Wie soll man sonst all die
vielen Klnge herausfiltern
knnen, die vom Vibrafon,
einer Wurlitzerorgel, einem
Cembalo und diversen zu
Percussions umfunktionier-
ten Kchenutensilien stam-

weit gefehlt: der freche, vita-
le, von Stephen Street (The
Smiths, Blur) produzierte
Alternative-Rock wei auch
auf Money And Celebrity
zu begeistern. Der Albumti-
tel gibt die Themen vor: The
Subways brauchen kein
Geld, um glcklich zu sein
(We Dont Need Money)
und lstern ber solche, die
auf Biegen und Brechen be-
rhmt werden wollen (Ce-
lebtrity). Wobei es auch
sinnfreier geht (I Wanna
Dance With You). kfb
Dum Dum Girls Only
In Dreams (Sub Pop/Car-
go, V 30.09): Iggy Pop hat-
te mal einen Song namens
Dum Dum Boys (auf The
Idiot, 1977). Lngst gibt es
die Dum Dum Girls. Die vier
Damen aus Kalifornien ste-
hen in der Tradition von The
Shangri-Las, The Cramps
und Siouxsie And The Bans-
hees, sprich: von krachigem
Indiepop. Jeder singt und
wenn die Gitarren ange-
schlagen werden, dann wur-
den vorher alle mglichen
Halleffekte angeschaltet.
Hauptsache die Songs klin-
gen altbacken und es
scheppert schn. Aber die
Vier Musikerinnen lassen
sich auch zu so etwas wie
einer Ballade hinreien
