Tutorial 1 Fluid Dynamics Question 1 Consider an impulse turbine with a pitch diameter of 4 m and a bucket angle 2 of 160o.

The jet velocity, V1, of 200 m/s and a jet diameter of 0.051 m causes the rotor to spin with a rotational speed of 240 rpm, determine: i) The force on the buckets ii) The torque on the runner iii) The power that the turbine extract from the fluid Assume that the velocity relative to the bucket does not change (W2 = W1) Question 2 Water for a Pelton wheel turbine flows from the head-water and through the penstock as shown in the figure. The effective friction factor for the penstock, control valve and the like is 0.032 and the diameter of the jet is 0.20 m. Determine the maximum power output. [23,200 kW]

Question 3 A Pelton wheel has a diameter of 2 m and develops 500 kW when rotating at 180 rpm. What is the average force of the water against the blades? If the turbine is operating at a maximum efficiency, determine the speed of the water from the nozzle and the mass flowrate. [26,600 N, 37.6 m/s, 707 kg/s] Question 4 Questions 12.1, 12.2 (Text book) page 689. Question 5 A centrifugal water pump having an impeller diameter of 0.5 m operates at 900 rpm. The water enters the pump parallel to the pump shaft. If the blade angle, 2 ( see figure) is 25o, determine the shaft power required to turn the impeller when the flow through the pump is 0.16 m3/s. The uniform blade height is 50 mm.

Question 6 A centrifugal radial water pump has the dimensions shown in the figure. The volume rate of flow is 0.25 ft/s, and the absolute inlet velocity is directed radially outward. The angular velocity of the impeller is 960 rpm. The exit velocity as seen from the coordinate system attaches to the impeller can be assumed to be tangent to the vane at its leading edge. Calculate the power required to drive the pump.
