RELIGION AS AN AREA OF KNOWLEDGE 3

GOD MATTERS XS IB CLE 2011-2012 REASON AS A WAY OF KNOWING IN RELIGION AND MORALITY REASON is a valuable way of knowing in the areas of RELIGIOUS BELIEFS and MORALITY, but it is used differently from SCIENCE (especially Physical Science). Read on Pascals Wager (Section III, #184-185, #233 par 67-69) by clicking this link. What rational argument does Pascal use to try to convince us that it makes more sense to believe in God than not to believe in God? Complete the diagram below by specifying the consequences in each box. IF GOD DOES NOT EXIST You do not lose anything. IF YOU BELIEVE IN GOD IF GOD EXISTS You gain everything, you go to heaven.

You do not lose anything. IF YOU DONT BELIEVE IN GOD

Youre screwed. You live a bad life, and now you regret it. You lose your chance at everlasting life.

In no more than two sentences, summarize Pascals main argument as illustrated in the diagram above? Do you personally nd it persuasive or powerful? Why or why not? Do you nd it limited? If so, in what way? The argument is that if you choose to believe in God, then you win the wager: if God exists, then you have lived in his accord, if He does not, then you have lost nothing. If you choose not to believe in God, there are two possible outcomes: if God does not exist, then you loose nothing, if God does exists, then you will suffer the consequences of your actions. I nd it a powerful one since it goes beyond the usual reasoning using morality by convincing us using opportunity cost. Answer this question then discuss with your group: How does the REASONING used by Pascal differ from REASONING in other domains of knowledge? He uses binary thinking, in a sense that he tries to simplify everything by giving only two options, two extremes. It goes against the usual reasoning where we consider doing actions actions to a certain degree, thinking like it depends or by how much, as opposed to his simplication of two extremes.
