Margaretville Our own little Soho

Despite a historical pedigree stretching back to the Hardenburgh Patent and the Livingston dynasty, Margaretville is hardly stodgy. In the early days of its settlement, when it was home to hardy Dutch farmers, it was known as Middletown Center, but in 1850 it was christened Margaretville, in honor of a Robert Livingston granddaughter, Margaret Lewis. This village at the galleries and hosts many local events. meeting of three waters became a bustling commercial and residential corridor before the Civil War. Farmers, settlers and travellers would come here for the tanneries, sawmills, hotels, boarding houses and other 19th century shopping necessities, such as a cobbler, cooperage, blacksmith, and wagon shop. Once the railroad arrived in the early 1870s, Margaretvilles tourism prospered and it became the departure point to the City for cash crops like cauliflower and butter.
