FIFTH SEMESTER B.TECH.

(ENGINEERING) DEGREE EXAMINATION DECEMBER 2008 EC 04 504 ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD THEORY (2004 admissions) Time : Three Hours Maximum: 100 Marks Answer all questions. Part A I. (a) Determine the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor composed of tin-foil sheets, 35 cm square for plates separated through a glass-dielectric 0.5 cm thick with relative permittivity 7. (b) Derive the relationship between electric field intensity and potential. (c) Express the scalar and vector magnetic potentials. When does the scalar potential exist? (d) What is Lorentz force? Explain with sketch. (e) Derive the general form of wave equation. (f) Obtain the expression for plane Electromagnetic wave in free space. (g) Derive the equation when the line is connected to load (i) ZL = 0; (ii) ZL =00 (iii) Z = Z0. (h) Describe the load matching using a quarter wave (A14) transformer. (8 x 5 = 40 marks) Part B II. (a) (i) Derive an expression for the potential at a point outside a hollow sphere having a uniform charge density. A hollow sphere is charged to 12C of electricity. Find the potential (a) at its surface; (b) inside the sphere ; (c) at a distance 0.3 m from the surface. The radius of the sphere is 0.5 m. (10 marks) (ii) The gradient of a scalar potential function 4 is given by: z\(p=3[(x2 yz+(y2 zx)j+(z2 _xy)k].

If the point (1,1,1) is at zero potential determine the potential function (p. (5 marks) Or (b) (i) Derive an expression for the energy storage in a capacitor. (ii) Determine the capacitance of a capacitor consisting of two parallel metal plates 30 cm x 30 cm. surface area, separated by 5 mm in air. What is the total energy stored by the capacitor if the capacitor is charged to a P.D. of 500 V ? What is the energy density? Turn over cm D51600
