Olympic transport arrangements may also affect traffic in some other parts of the UK. Venuespecific routes will also be in place at Weymouth and Portland, where the sailing competitions will take place (the A354 is the main road affected here); Eton Dorney (near Slough), where the rowing and canoe events will be held; and Hadleigh Farm, in Essex, where parts of the A13 will be affected while the mountain biking course is in use.

The Olympic routes are reserved for the 78,400 athletes, officials, IOC members, sponsors and media who are considered to be members of the Olympic Family. 1,200 of them will be allocated a vehicle and a driver. These include Jacques Rogge, president of the IOC, above right, Sepp Blatter, president of Fifa, right, and the heads of all the National Olympic Committees from around the world, as well as 25 marketing partners.

Athletes such as Usain Bolt, right, will hope to enjoy stress-free journeys travelling on buses or special electric bicycles, or they can travel free on public transport. The media - 22,000 are expected - will also be able to travel in the lanes.
