OPTICAL COMMUNICATON USING SUBCARRIER PSK INTENSITY MODULATION THROUGH ATMOSPHERIC TURBULENCE CHANNELS

PREPARED BY:

INTRODUCTION
OC is a good wireless interconnect technology for high capacity communication networks Challenge is to mitigate signal scintillation by turbulence channel Existing system employs high transmission power Need to develop theory and technology to overcome scintillation and reduce cost

SCINTILLATION

variation of illuminance mainly occurs at turbulence channel can be reduced by aperture averaging but theres a limit in aperture averaging for turbulence optical communication

OC system through turbulence

system consists a transmitter and a receiver information source and a information sink encoder and a decoder interleaver and a deinterleaver electrical modulator and demodulator optical modulator and photodetector telescopes

Intensity of received signal P(u,t) =A(u,t).Ps(t) Psd of received electrical signal: R(f) =A(f)+A(f)*Z(f)+N(f) Scintillation process limit demodulation performance

OC using OOK intensity modulation

represent digital data as presence and absence of wave information data is converted into an electrical signal this electrical signal drives the laser BER limit: BER cannot be very small even when SNR is very high

Oc employing subcarrier PSK intensity modulation

Separation of information carrying signal from non information carrying signal Data sequence is modulated using PSK in electrical modulator PSK signal is up converted to an IF fc must be high to prevent overlap in frequency domain

BER limit : Subcarrier PSK modulation is more suitable than OOK

CONCLUSION
Subcarrier PSK IM can effectively mitigate scintillation Superior to OOK in presence of turbulence channel Improved performance Reduce transmission power
