An eager Leap towards Green Oman, By CCEO It is a matter of great prestige that Mr.Ahmed Nasser Ali Al Wahaibi, Mr.

Jehad Mohammed Juma Al Jabri and Mr. Suleiman Masoud Abdullah Al Khayari, Level-3 Computer Engineering students of Caledonian College of Engineering have won the Best Applicability and Practicality Project, award for the project Smart Dew Collector to reduce the risk of the desertification, during the Engineering Students Gathering held at SQU from 4th April 2010 to 6th April 2010 . It is well recognized that the Sultanate of Oman is in the acute grip of desertification. This is evidenced by the depreciating area of agricultural land and appearance of alarming sand dunes in different parts of the Sultanate. However, as is obvious, we as Engineers always strive, in all alacrity, to assist the Governance in finding solutions that may have a positive impact on the society. These pioneering students of Caledonian College of Engineering have come out with an innovative idea which is very feasible and cost effective to implement and optimally ideal for the harsh arid conditions of the Sultanate. The aim of this project is to develop a Smart Device that can collect the Dew Drops in a water storage tank and then use this water for irrigation purpose. Dew Collector Net serves the purpose of collecting Dew Drops. The Dew Collector Net will not be active during the daytime and also care will be taken to protect the net from the excruciating scorching sun. Solar Panels will be used to provide the power required for Net operation. Moisture content detection sensor will assist to indicate when the water tank valve has to opened, so that the required amount of water can be supplied to the plants. The Light Sensor provides guidance in deciding when to open the Dew Collector Net. Further the developers of this novel system strongly believe that, in a long run, this will definitely throw light in saving the Earth from the perils of a major disaster such as the dreaded Desertification.

The above figure lucidly depicts the Smart Dew Collector, the novel creation of the pioneering

students whose profiles are shown. Mr.Ahmed Nasser Ali Al Wahaibi, Mr. Jehad Mohammed Juma Al Jabri and Mr. Suleiman Masoud Abdullah Al Khayari (left to right), the veritable brains behind the idea, have once again brought accolades to Caledonian College of Engineering, to establish its place as the number one centre for Engineering excellence.
