    Hypertension, also known as the "silent killer", is defined as a systolic pressure over 140 mmHg or a diastolic pressure over 90 mmHg. Risk factors include heredity, sex, age, smoking, drinking alcohol, obesity, and diabetes. Hypertension results from increased cardiac output, sympathetic nervous system activity, renal sodium and water absorption, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, and decreased vasodilation, which leads to elevated blood pressure and tissue ischemia and end-organ dysfunction.
