Acknowledgments
I would like to thank my research tutor Dr Jean Kempf from the Universit Lumire Lyon 2 for
his corrections and his help throughout the year.
I also would like to thank Dr Romain Huret from the Universit Lumire Lyon 2 and Brigitte
Esnault from ISH-Triangle Lyon which made my research field trip to the Library of Congress and the
University of Pennsylvania in January 2011 possible. This research field trip gave me access to all my
primary sources and can be seen as the starting point of this study. It also provided me with access to
numerous publications unavailable in France that played a crucial role in my research.
I also would like to thank Marissa and Krista Mancini at George Washington University in
Washington DC and Jeffrey Knight in Philadelphia who hosted me during my field trip in the United
States.
