Faulconer Testimony to Centre City Development Corporation Board January 25, 2012 As the Councilmember who represents downtown, I know how crucial Solar Turbines is to San Diego, and how important the companys ability to operate is to the nearly 4,000 San Diegans who rely on Solar for employment. Over the last month you've heard about the positive impacts Solar Turbines and the thousands of San Diegans they employ have on our region. We cannot put this company and those jobs at risk. This board has also heard about the broad support Solar has received. Solar Turbines has called San Diego home for more than 80 years. It employs more than 3,800 people at its Kearny Mesa and downtown facilities. This is a company that makes cutting edge technology and operates in 98 countries across the world, yet still has deep roots in San Diego. As Solar Turbines has grown, San Diego has grown up around it. Its no coincidence that this companys international headquarters is located in the heart of San Diego. Solar Turbines is part of the fabric of our community. Just ask the thousands of San Diegans it employs many of which are here today how important it is to have quality, local jobs here in our neighborhood. These jobs and the positive economic impact they produce are critical to our local economy. The development proposal across the street will create insurmountable conflicts between residential and industrial uses that could ultimately result in Solar Turbines having to relocate its operations and the jobs that come with it. People are always talking about attracting jobs. But we must also protect the jobs we have. I urge you to please support Solar Turbines and the thousands of people that it employs.
