Pengra wins BEA scholarship
Katie Pengra, a SJMC graduate student and Dr. Tim Englands teaching assistant, is one of 10 students nationally to receive a 2012-2013 scholarship from the Broadcast Education Association. Pengra is one of two recipients of the Walter Patterson Scholarship sponsored by the National Association of Broadcasters. The other win is a student at Syracuse University. NBS students take 7 awards

AUSTIN Texas State members of the National Broadcasting Society won seven awards three rsts, three seconds and an honorable mention at the groups South Central Region Student Production Competition. Caleb Hey won rst place awards in the TV Commercial, Music Video, and the Video Open categories. Mason Robinson, Kenn Zuniga and Jaclyn Doan won second place awards. Robinson won for baseball play-by-play announcing; Zuniga and Doan in TV Features for a Bobcat Update story on the Cephas House Restoration Project. The South Central Region of NBS includes schools from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. A team of Texas State public relations students placed third among 12 teams from six Texas universities in the annual Texas Public Relations Association competition at The University of Texas at Dallas. The competition focused on the use of social media in public relations. TPRA judges praised the Texas State team for using a variety of social media tools in its plan and demonstrated a high level of knowledge in the use of computer optimization and computer analytics to both execute and evaluate their plan. TCU placed rst and Abilene Christian University placed second in the competition. The teams were given a fact situation and 90 minutes to email their plan to the judges. Others teams were from The University of Texas at Austin, Baylor and Texas Tech.

Choi studies Korean home shopping

Jinbong Chois article, An analysis of persuasive communication in Korean home shopping advertising will appear in the Volume 31 (6) issue of TEXT & TALK Journal, pages 643-659. Choi is the author of six books: Framing North Korea; Media, Culture and Korea; Reading Media; Event PD Guide; Modern Society and Korean Mass Media; and Understanding Christian Communication. He has also published several scholarly articles in refereed aca-

demic journals. He was awarded a Ph.D. from the Department of Communication Studies at University of Minnesota.

Royal: S-H Teacher of Year nalist

Cindy Royal has been named one of ve national nalists for the 2011 Scripps Howard Foundation JMC Teacher of the Year Award. The cash prize and trophy will be awarded at AEJMC in Chicago in August. She now will be submitting a statement about her teaching philosophy for the nal selection committee.
