Trevors Parallettes

A parallette is a short bar, parallel to and raised a few inches above the floor by a sturdy support structure. Parallettes are usually used in pairs. They are great for doing deep pushups, vertical pushups with your legs up against a wall, and for practicing various parallel-bar elements such as handstands, L-holds, and straddle-Ls. You can make a pair of compact, portable parallettes from PVC parts that cost less than ten dollars at your local Home Depot store. PVC is a tough material that is well-suited to this task: it is lightweight, moderately flexible, and it tolerates lots of mechanical stress without fracturing. Figure 2 illustrates the parts required for one parallette and how they are assembled.

Assembly Instructions
1. Cut the pipe into the required lengths and clean the pipe ends with sandpaper, if necessary. Figure 2 shows the lengths I used; you may want to change the dimensions to suit your preferences. For example, you might want to raise the bar higher from the floor, or make the bar longer. Connect the pieces tightly together; no PVC cement is required!

Notes
1. If you will be doing mostly p-bar practice, you can extend these pipes to about 24", eliminate their end caps and use them to join the parallettes into a single p-bar. In this case, you will need only four of the 4 pipe segments and end caps, instead of the eight required for separate parallettes. See Figure 1 for details.

Tools
q Hacksaw or any other fine-toothed saw, for cutting the PVC pipe. Or use a PVC pipe cutter, if you have one. q Sandpaper for cleaning up the pipe ends after cutting them with a saw.

Materials
q 1 standard ten-foot length of 1" o.d. Schedule 40 PVC pipe. If necessary, you can cut this into two pieces at the store so it will more easily fit into your vehicle. q 4 elbows, 1" PVC. q 4 tees, 1" PVC. q 8 pipe caps, 1" PVC (see Note 1).
