1. Arrange for students to work in pairs. Distribute one copy of Activity Sheets A and B to each student pair. Tell students that they will play the game Spare Tire. Point out that the race cars on Activity Sheet A all have flat tires. In the game, players will use spare tires from Activity Sheet B to replace the flat tires. 2. Assist student pairs as needed to prepare the game: Color the cars on Activity Sheet A as you wish. Cut out the cars. Cut out the spare tires on Activity Sheet B. 3. Explain the rules of the game: Put all the cars facedown in a pile. Put all the tires facedown in another pile. Each player draws two cars from the car pile. Place the cars faceup in front of you. (The remaining car will not be used in this round of the game. Set it aside.) Take turns drawing spare tires from the spare tire pile. Place your spare tires faceup in front of youunless you can use two of your tires to fix a car. To fix a car, you must be able to spell a word with the consonants on your spare tires and the vowel on the car. Try to be the first player to fix both of your cars. 4. Give students time to play several rounds of the game. Let them store the game in an envelope labeled with their name. Provide other opportunities during free time or at other times for students to play Spare Tire.
