Aim: To estimate the area of regular and irregular shapes. Apparatus / Materials: Ruler, graph paper and fresh leaf. Procedure:
1. Regular shapes such as square, rectangle, triangle and circle were drawn on a piece of graph paper (Figure 1). 2. Each square which had an area of 1 cm2 was marked with A. 3. Each square which had an area of more than equal to cm2 and less than 1 cm2 was marked with B C3-a+d
4. The number of As and Bs for each shape was counted. Then the estimated area for each shape was calculated.
5. The leaf was placed on the graph paper. It was pressed flat and its outline was traced. C3-a+d

Observation and results: C3-b+c+e+f Shape Number of squares marked A Square Rectangle Triangle Circle Leaf 9 30 4 20 26 Number of squares marked B 6 9 12 9 30 10 29 38 Area (A+ B) cm2
1. What is the unit of measurement for area? C5-b The unit is cm2 2. How many mm2 are there in cm2? C5-a There are 100 mm2 in 1 cm2
3. Why the area is obtained using this method not accurate? C5-c We are rounding up the area of each square marked B. So the estimated area would be greater than the actual area.
4. How can you estimate the area of the leaf more accurately? C5-d Use smaller squares. For example, count the number of squares with an area of 4 mm2
Conclusion : Graph paper can be used to estimate the area of regular and irregular shapes.
