LESSON 1: THE FIELD EFFECT TRANSISTORS

ECEN 60 (Electronics II)

Introduction
FET stands for Field Effect Transistor. FET is a device which enables us to use one electrical signal to control another. Variations of FET technology are based on different ways of generating the electric field. FETs are preferred to work for weak-signals and circuits and systems requiring high impedance.

FET vs BJT

BJT is a current-controlled device while FET is a voltage-controlled device. BJT is a bipolar device while FET is a unipolar device FET is less noisy than BJT. FET is smaller than BJT in construction.

FET vs BJT

FET is more temperature stable than BJT. FET has higher input impedance than BJT. Lastly, the terminals are different ....

Types of FET
There are three general type of FET namely : JFET, MESFET and MOSFET. Each types are also subdivided as follows: JFET : N-channel JFET and P-channel JFET MESFET : N-channel MESFET and Pchannel MESFET MOSFET : D-MOSFET and E-MOSFET

JFET (Junction Field Effect Transistor)

JFET comes in two flavors which are the n-channel JFET and p-channel JFET. In the absence of any applied voltage, JFET has gate channel junctions.

How does field effect work?

The resulting field at the plate causes electrons to gather and as an electron bridge forms current is allowed to flow.
