Pioneers in promotion of SHGS in India First SHG in Alwar, Rajstan, in1987 Saving & credit for rural women

WHAT IS SHG ?
An informal association of 10 to 20 poor women of same village & of same socioeconomic background  To gain identity as individual utilizing immense power of mutual aid  Platform from where they can access banks & public services & spearhead changes that affect them as poor women


ROLE OF PRADAN
     

Nurture SHG of rural poor women to fulfill its mission & goal Provide guidance Support and assistance Identify & promote home-based enterprises called as HONEY BEE activities It includes myriad of activities Member of group takes loan from SHG to start their home based enterprise

Comprise half of the countrys population  Most disadvantaged sector among the poor  Most effective in fostering change in their families and communities  As of march 2010, PRADAN works with 13,049 SHGS in 8 states with a total membership of 177529 rural women & total saving of 459 million rupees  Computer Munshi System

FOREST BASED LIVELIHOOD

WHAT THEY DO ?
    

PRDAN works with Adivasis & poor who live near forests trees are their source of livelihood Deforestation decreased income for this communities Forest & tree based livelihood interventions in Jharkhand & Orissa Consists of Tasar cocoon production, Lac cultivation, & produciton and trading of siali leaf plates

Farm forestry also taken as a part of program on integrated natural resource management  In all 4,964 families involved in various activities

PRADAN is supported by
Government department such as Agriculture & the Ministry of Textile  No of resource institutions such as the central silk board & the Indian Lac Research Institute


LAC CULTIVATION
     

Insect Lac lives on sap of certain trees & secrete lac Resin Processed resin called as Shellac Shellac has several industrial application in food & drug industries Lac rearing & cultivation is a traditional occupation Source of income for thousands of poor (eastern India) Most of potential is untapped
