Section C Notes If it can dissolve in water it is soluble. Solubility is the measure of how easily it is dissolved.

Solutions- homogeneous (uniform) mixture solute- what is being dissolved. Solvent- the dissolving medium Water is universal solvent. Soluble a substance that dissolves in a solution Insoluble- a substance that doesn t dissolve in a solution Factors that affect the rate of solvation/ catalyst: Agitating the mixture(stirring/)mixing Increace surface area of the solute Increase temp. of the solvent. Solubility: the maximum amount of solute that will dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a specified temp. And pressure 62g KNO3/ 100gH2O @40 Degrees Celsius Saturated solution- the maximum amount of dissolved solute for a given amount of solvent at a specific tempature. Unsaturated solution a solution that contains less dissolved solute for a given temperature and pressure than a saturated solution. Supersaturated solution- contains more dissolved solute than a saturated solution at the same temp. C-6+7 Notes

Way to measure concentrations- if we have 4.5g of NaCl dissolved into 45.5g of H2O what is % by mass of NaCl? % by mass= part over whole x100% or solute over solutionx1100%= solute over solute and solvent x 100% ppm (parts per million) ppb (parts per billion)
